Thompson named tournament MVP, Harrison captures All-Tournament honors

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Behind a stifling 2-3 zone defense that limited its opponent to a 36.7 shooting percentage from the floor, the Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team finished with a 4-0 record as host of the inaugural “Ice Man” Classic with a 57-47 victory over the University of Texas Pan-American Sunday, Nov. 18, at the Convocation Center.

Daylen Harrison (Akron, Ohio-St. Vincent St. Mary) recorded a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Eagles to victory, also earning him “Ice Man” Classic All-Tournament Team honors.

A trio of Detroit natives assisted in the win as Glenn Bryant (Detroit, Mich.-Oak Hill Academy) added 11 points, Da'Shonte Riley (Detroit Mich.-Detroit Count. Day) posted 8 points to go with 11 rebounds, and Derek Thompson (Detroit, Mich.-Melvindale) followed with 7 points of his own. Averaging 15 points per game throughout the tournament, Thompson was named the “Ice Man” Classic's Most Valuable Player.

The Green and White exploited its size advantage, out-rebounding the Broncs, 39-27. The plus-12 rebounding margin led to 18 second-chance points and 30 points in the paint. EMU was 23-of-57 (40.4 percent) from the field in the contest which included a 3-of-8 (37.5 percent) effort from beyond the arc.

UTPA was limited to 18 buckets in the game on 49 shots for a 36.7 percent clip. The Broncs shot well from three-point land, going 6-of-20 (30 percent). Brandon Provost was the leading scorer for the visitors with 11 points. He was the only Bronc to reach double digits.

Winning all four games in the tournament, EMU moves to 4-1 on the season. With the loss, UTPA drops to 1-5 on the season.

Both teams struggled to find points early on as the Eagles held a 10-9 lead midway through the first half. Following four straight points by Texas Pan-American, Eastern went on a 13-2 run in the next six minutes to take a 23-15 led with 3:03 remaining in the opening half. The Eagles were able to hold on to the lead as they went into the locker room, 24-19.

Unlike the slow start in the first half, EMU came out lightning-fast in the second half, going on a 12-3 run in just over three minutes to take a 36-22 lead. Sticking with the 2-3 zone defense, the Eagles prevented Texas Pan-American from getting closer than six points for the rest of the game.

The Green and White will hit the home hardwood again Saturday, Nov. 24 at 6:30 p.m. against Madonna. The game will be the nightcap of a doubleheader as the women's team will face off against Harvard beginning at 4 p.m.
