Harrison, Bryant and Lee hit double figures

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team scored 28 points off of 21 turnovers as the Eagles defeated Madonna University, 75-57, Saturday night, Nov. 24 at the Convocation Center.

Daylen Harrison (Akron, Ohio-St. Vincent St. Mary) scored 17 points to lead the Eagles, who shot 44.9 percent from the floor. Glenn Bryant (Detroit, Mich.-Oak Hill Academy) and Ray Lee (Detroit, Mich.-Romulus) notched career-highs in points, scoring 16 and 14, respectively. Da'Shonte Riley (Detroit, Mich.-Detroit Country Day) added a team-best and career-high 13 rebounds.

Travis Schuba scored 23 points to lead the Crusaders in the loss, going 7-of-22 from three-point land. As a team, Madonna shot 35.2 percent (19-of-54) from the floor.

EMU improves to 5-1 on the 2012-13 campaign, its best start to a season since going 6-1 to start the 2004-05 season. Madonna drops to 5-2 on the year.

Two contrasting offenses took the floor as Eastern Michigan controlled the paint while Madonna dominated from beyond the arc. EMU outscored MU, 38-12, in the paint, but Madonna shot 12-of-33 from three-point range while Eastern only managed to go 4-of-17 from deep.

Unlike in recent games, both teams got off to fast starts as Madonna took a 12-8 lead into the first media timeout. The Crusaders shot 4-of-8 from the floor, including 3-of-6 from three-point land, while the Eagles shot 4-of-9 to start.

Coming out of the timeout, Madonna increased its lead with its fourth three-pointer of the game. A put-back dunk and a layup followed as EMU Head Coach Rob Murphy was forced to take a timeout with his team down, 19-8, with 12:22 remaining in the first half.

The timeout seemed to work as the Eagles went on a 7-0 run over the next four minutes to cut the lead to four points. While the Green and White found success on the inside, Madonna continued to hit from the outside, making three more long balls to maintain a 30-21 lead with 6:18 to go in the opening half.

However, the Eastern defense stepped up, holding Madonna scoreless for the rest of the half and going on a 12-0 run to take a 33-30 lead into the locker room.

The Eagles opened up the second half scoring the first four points to take a 37-30 lead. Schuba finally ended his team's 10-minute scoring drought with his fourth three of the game, to cut the EMU lead to only four points. The Crusaders would not get any closer the rest of the game as Eastern responded with a 10-0 run that included back-to-back three-pointers by Derek Thompson (Detroit, Mich.-Melvindale) to make it 47-33 with 13:22 remaining in the game.

The lead increased as Jamell Harris (Euclid, Ohio-Euclid), Bryant, and Lee all added dunks along with a three from Austin Harper (Grand Haven, Mich.-Grand Haven) to make it a 75-52 game with under two minutes to go.

EMU now heads into its longest stretch between games as the Eagles will not be in action again until Dec. 3 at Syracuse University, the former stomping grounds of Coach Murphy. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at the Carrier Dome.
