Eagles Look to Change the Tide Against Toledo and Ball State

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michign University volleyball team continues the Mid-American Conference portion of the 2012 season Friday, Oct. 5, when it travels to Toledo, Ohio to take on the University of Toledo Rockets at 7 p.m. The Eagles will then travel to Muncie, Ind. to square off with the Ball State University Cardinals Saturday, Oct. 6, at 7:30 p.m.
KNOCKED-OFF ON THE ROAD: The Eastern Michigan University volleyball squad split its opening pair of Mid-American Conference matches. EMU first fell to Western Michigan University, 2-3, Sept. 21, they won a striaght set match against Northern Illinois University. The Eagles then traveled to Mount Pleasant, Mich. to take on the Chippewas of Central Michigan University and were dropped in straight sets, Sept. 27. EMU moved down south to Athens, Ohio, Sept. 29, to square-off with the Ohio University Bobcats and fell again in straight sets.
ALL-TIME AGAINST THIS WEEKEND'S FIELD: Eastern Michigan University and the University of Toledo have faced-off 58 times over the years. The Eagles hold a commanding lead in the series, 46-12, in those matches.
The Rockets and Eagles first met in 1976 during EMU's first year competing in volleyball. Eastern swept UT in that match, Oct. 9. Last year, the Eagles split a pair of matches with Toledo. In the series opener between EMU and UT, the Green and White welcomed the Rockets to the Convocation Center and earned a 3-0 sweep, Oct. 7. Eastern traveled to Toledo, Nov. 12, where the Rockets were able to defeat the Eagles, 3-2.
EMU has taken on Ball State University 62 times, with the Cardinals holding a 21-41 edge. EMU and the Ball State first squared-off in 1978 when Eastern was swept by the Cardinals, 3-0, Sept. 30. Last season, the Eagles swept the regular season series with the Cardinals, but fell in the first round of the 2011 Mid-American Conference Volleyball Tournament, 1-3.
IAQUANIELLO NAMED 2012 SENIOR CLASS AWARD CANDIDATE: Eastern Michigan University senior outside hitter, Rachel Iaquaniello, was named as one-of-30 NCAA® women's volleyball student-athletes who excel both on and off the court that were selected as candidates today, Sept. 20, for the 2012 Senior CLASS Award® in collegiate volleyball. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition. The complete list of candidates follows this release.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School ®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
The 2012 candidate class includes 16 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-Americans from last season. Twenty-four of the 30 candidates have maintained a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better. One of the candidates was recognized by the College Sports Information Directors of America as a 2011 Capital One Academic All-American. The Senior CLASS Award winners will be announced during the 2012 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship, which will take place December 13 and 15 in Louisville, Kentucky.
HITTING THE ROAD: EMU continued its Mid-American Conference portion of the schedule last weekend, the Eagles are on the road for four straight matches. Eastern Michigan dropped its first two road conference matches.
The Green and White continue its road trip heading to Toledo, Oct. 5, and Ball State, Oct. 6, before returning home the weekend of Oct. 12-13. The Eagles will face Bowling Green, Oct. 12, before welcoming Miami to the Convocation Center, Oct. 13.

SCOUTING THE ROCKETS: The Rockets were selected to finish sixth in the Mid-American Conference West Division, one spot behind Eastern. Toledo is 7-9 on the season and 1-3 in conference matches. UT has struggled to keep the opponent's offense at-bay this season. The Rockets' opponents are hitting .226 against them and only Kent State has a worse opponent hitting percentage (.244). Toledo is struggling in multiple offensive categories as well. The Rockets average just 10.74 assists per set, which ranks last in the conference and 11.51 kills per set which is 11th.
For UT, Dakota Harkins is leading in attack percentage (.244) this season, which ranks 10th in the conference. Adria Pryor sits at seventh in the MAC in assists, averaging 9.45 per set.
SCOUTING THE CARDINALS: After being picked to finish fourth in the Mid-American Conference West Division, the Ball State Cardinals have started the 2012 campaign 9-8, with a 2-2 conference record. The Cardinals have been exceptional at the net on both sides to start the season. BSU holds a .232 team attack percentage which is third in the MAC, while holding opponents to a .188 clip, good for fourth. Ball State is in the top-five in the conference in each team category except for blocks, where the Cardinals rank 11th with 1.72 per set. As a team the Cardinals are 38th nationally in assists, averaging 13.17, and 44th in kills per set at 13.93.
Lisa Scott has turned in an excellent start to the season posting the fifth-best attack percentage in the conference at .305, while preseason All-MAC honoree, Kara Bates, ranks third in the conference in kills at 3.97 per set. Jacqui Seidel ranks third in the conference in assists per set with 11.15, which also ranks 32nd in the NCAA. Kylee Baker's 0.29 service aces per set are good for seventh in the MAC.
AMONG THE NATIONAL RANKS: Eagles' senior, Rachel Iaquaniello, is tied for 51st in the NCAA for the most kills per set. The Plymouth, Mich. native is averaging 4.00 kills per set which is tied with four other student-athletes across the nation for the 51st best mark nationally.
As a team, the Green and White rank 52nd nationally in digs per set with 16.58. Penn leads the nation in digs, averaging 21.25 per set, while Western Michigan leads the MAC with 17.33 (27th nationally).

The Plymouth, Mich. native has 1,127 career digs, which ranks 12th all-time at Eastern. It's the career-sets-played record that Iaquaniello can still reach this season. She currently has played 457 sets in her career, and 506 is the record held by 2011 senior, Ashley Mason.
BAKER EYEING THE BLOCK ASSISTS RECORD: Senior middle blocker, Kristen Baker, is looking to catch former EMU standout, Jill Hutton (1996-99), for the career block assists record. Baker has logged 305 block assists in her time donning the Green and White. She sits in fourth place all-time, while Hutton notched 402 block assists.
LEADING THE MAC IN...: Eastern has been near the top of the conference in multiple categories both as a team and individually.
As a team, the Green and White is sixth in the conference in aces per set. As of Oct. 2, EMU is averaging 1.17 aces per set which trails Buffalo (1.40), Akron (1.29), Central Michigan (1.28), Bowling Green (1.26) and Northern Illinois (1.24). The Eagles are also third in digs per set, with the Green and White is posting 16.58 digs while Western Michigan leads at 17.33 and NIU is second at 16.67.
Individually, Eastern has a few student-athletes showing off their skill on the hardwood. Rachel Iaquaniello is second in the MAC in kills at 4.00 per set, she is trailing Paige Penrod of Bolwing Green (4.07). Megan Crawshaw is fifth in the MAC for blocking, averaging 1.04 blocks per set, while Sierra Reed is 10th in digs per set, with 4.05.
