Eastern Michigan Clipped by Falcons in Five Sets

After taking the first two sets, the Eagles dropped three in a row

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – After leading by two sets, the Eastern Michigan University volleyball team dropped three straight sets to fall at home to the Bowling Green State University Falcons Friday evening, Oct. 12. The five-set loss (28-26, 25-22, 13-25, 20-25, 11-15) snapped EMU's chances of winning three straight in conference play.

The Eagles fell to 13-10 and 3-4 in Mid-American Conference matches, while the Falcons improved to 11-7 on the season and 7-0 in conference tilts.

Eastern was led by Kristen Baker (Mentor, Ohio-Mentor) who posted a .259 attack percentage (12-5-27). Rachel Iaquaniello (Plymouth, Mich.-Dearborn Divine Child) led the Eagles with 19 kills, while adding 13 digs. Kim Hildreth (Novi, Mich.-Novi) posted an average of 10 assists per set, picking up 50 in the match, along with 17 digs. Erin Short (Orrville, Ohio-Orrville) earned a double-double by notching 11 kills and 15 digs in the match. Sierra Reed (Parker City, Ind.-Wapahani) had a team-high 20 digs in the match.

The Green and White took the opening frame, 28-26, using four kills from Baker, three from Paige Roback (Maumee, Ohio-Notre Dame Academy) and a pair from Hildreth, Iaquaniello and Short. Hildreth was able to notch 12 assists in the first frame, while picking up a set-high six digs. Despite hitting just .085 (14-10-47), the Eagles used five aces in the frame to take the opening set.

Eastern took a 2-0 lead when they topped Bowling Green, 25-22, in the second set. The Eagles used five kills from Short and 12 more assists from Hildreth to take the set. Short hit an outstanding .714 (5-0-7), while Baker posted a .600 attack percentage (3-0-5) in the set. As a team, Eastern hit a shade better than the Falcons at .205 (13-4-44), while BGSU had a .200 attack percentage (16-7-45).

The Falcons came out of halftime strong and won the third set, 25-13, using a .366 attack percentage (17-2-41). Paige Penrod picked up six kills in the set for BGSU, while Lindsey Butterfield added five of her own. The Eagles hit just .080 (11-7-50) with Iaquaniello leading the way offensively, posting six kills in the frame.

Bowling Green evened up the score at two sets apiece by winning the fourth frame, 25-20. The Eagles had a five-kill performance in the set from Iaquaniello, and Baker went a perfect three-for-three in the frame. As a team, the Green and White hit .175 (11-4-40) while the Falcons hit a staggering .314 (16-5-35) en route to fourth-set victory.

Eastern dropped the final set, 11-15, despite hitting .368 (9-2-19). Bowling Green used a .429 hitting percentage (10-1-21) to take the final set of the match.

The Eagles continue their weekend of competition Saturday, Oct. 13, when they play host to the Miami University RedHawks. The “Dig Pink” match is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Convocation Center.
