Eagles win doubles point and Mebuke captures No. 1 single battle

EAST LANSING, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team won the doubles point and the match at No. 1 singles, but Michigan State University managed to win the remaining five singles points to take a 5-2 dual-match victory here Sunday, Jan. 29, indoors at the MSU Tennis Facility.

The Eagles, playing without No. 1 singles player Miriam Westerink (Rheden, The Netherlands-Thomas a Kempis), who missed the match with the flu, won the first two doubles matches. Sophomore Mariya Toncheva (Burgas, Bulgeria-Sport School Vasil Levski) and senior Georgia de'Lisle-Tarr (Adelaide, Australia-Sacred Heart) teamed to best Michigan States Nicole Herzog and Katarina Lingl at No. 1 doubles, 8-4, and the EMU No. 2 duo of sophomore Nino Mebuke (Tbilisi, Georgia) and freshman Daphne Friedrichs (Hufingen, Germany-Elisa Brandstrom Schule) beat the MSU team of Michaela Silesova and Julianne Gruber, 8-6.

EMU dropped the No. 3 doubles matchup, but managed to gain the one point awarded for doubles.

“We were a bit shorthanded today without Westerink (flu),” EMU Head Coach Ryan Ray said.  “The girls responded well to start taking the doubles.  We just didn't keep the momentum going at the start of singles.  It was a good effort, but just didn't get the job done today.”

Mebuke, who moved up from her usual No. 2 spot to No. 1 with Westerink out of action, defeated Herzog, 6-2, 6-2. That would be the lone singles point that EMU, now 3-3 on the year, would win as the Spartans captured the last five singles matches for the 5-2 victory.
