CALABASH, N.C. -
Every up-and-coming golfer looks for a watershed moment that lets them know they can compete at the highest levels of golf. Rookie Martin Jeppesen had his on Thursday.

Jeppesen of Ypsilanti, Mich., shot a 4-under 68 in the final round of the NGA Pro Golf Tour Carolina Winter Series event at Farmstead Golf Links to force a playoff with Nationwide Tour member Darron Stiles and birdied the first extra hole to earn his inaugural professional victory.

“I will remember this the rest of my life,” said Jeppesen, an Eastern Michigan alumnus. “It's a great feeling to get a win, and it means even more to do it against a guy like Darron. I mean he's fully-exempt on the Nationwide Tour.”

Jeppesen started the final round four shots behind Stiles and fell further from contention with a double bogey on No 2. However, the former All-MAC selection roared back with an eagle and two birdies to make the turn in 34 and close the gap on the four-time Nationwide Tour winner. On the inward nine, Jeppesen carded another 34, including a birdie on his final hole, to join Stiles, who shot an even-par 72 in the final round, at 8-under par.

“I was trying to stay patient today, but I knew I had to be aggressive at the same time because of how far back I was,” said Jeppesen. “I felt comfortable with the layout, but I struggled to figure out the greens. However, I did make about six 40-foot bombs this week.”

The final one came on the final hole. Facing a 40-foot putt to Stiles' 20-footer on the first playoff hole, Jeppesen found the back of the cup, while Stiles couldn't convert, giving the rookie his first victory.

“I have to thank my parents, my fiancé, Carley, my college coach, Bruce Cunningham, and my swing coach, Jordan Young, for their support,” said Jeppesen. “I also have to thank the NGA Pro Golf Tour for being such a great place to start my professional career and all the staff at Farmstead for great event.”

Jeppesen shot rounds of 70-70-68 for an 8-under 208 total and earned $3,600 for the win. Former CWS winner Stiles of Pinehurst carded rounds of 70-66-72 to finish with a 208 total and earned $1,815 for his runner-up effort.
