EMU HITS THE ROAD FOR BALL STATE TILT: The 2011-12 Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team will travel to Muncie, Ind. Saturday, Jan. 14, for a 2 p.m. Mid-American Conference West Division battle with the Ball State University Cardinals.
First-year Head Coach Rob Murphy's Eagles enter the game with a 6-10 overall record and a 1-1 MAC mark after suffering a hard-fought 60-56 home loss to Central Michigan Wednesday, Jan. 11. The Eagles opened the MAC season Saturday, Jan. 7, with a 47-40 win at Northern Illinois.
Ball State is one of the West Division co-leaders with a 2-0 league mark and a 10-4 overall record.  Ball State opened its league schedule with a 78-69 home win over Western Michigan, Jan. 7, and followed that up with a 70-68 road win at Toledo, Jan. 10.

GOING BACK TO INDIANA:  Eastern Michigan redshirt sophomore guard J.R. Sims (Fort Wayne, Ind.-Snider) will be returning to his home state Saturday, Jan. 14, when the Eagles play at Ball State.  As a player at Snider H.S. in Fort Wayne, Ind., his head coach was his dad, Ray. Sims has played in 15 games this season and is averaging 5.6 points and 2.0 rebounds.

CONVO DEBUT:  The CMU game marked the Convocation Center debut of EMU sophomore center Da'Shonte Riley (Detroit, Mich.-Country Day-Syracuse) and the 7-footer responded with five points, a career-best 10 rebounds with two blocks in 26 minutes of action.  Riley transferred this fall from Syracuse University and sat out the first 10 games of the 2011-12 season before being awarded an NCAA transfer waiver to be able to play this season.  He has played in six games and is averaging 5.3 points and 4.5 rebounds.

BLOCK PARTY:  Junior forward Jamell Harris (Euclid, Ohio-Euclid) recorded five blocked shots against Central Michigan Wednesday, Jan. 11, to give him 27 blocks on the season.  He is currently second in the EMU record books with 121 career rejects.

FOUR IN DOUBLES:  The Eagles had four players in double figures in Wednesday's, Jan. 14, 60-56 loss to CMU.  Junior forward Jamell Harris (Euclid, Ohio-Euclid) led the way wiuth 12 points, eight rebounds and five blocked shots.  Senior guard Antonio Green (Inkster, Mich.-Dearborn Heights Robichaud) added 11 while guards Darrell Lampley (Linden, N.J.-Linden-Lakeland (Ohio) C.C.) and Austin Harper (Grand Haven, Mich.-Grand Haven-Glen Oaks C.C.) added 10 each.  That 10-point effort by Harper was a career high.

STRONG DOWN THE STRETCH:  Senior guard Darrell Lampley (Linden, N.J.-Linden-Lakeland (Ohio) C.C.) turned in an outstanding effort down the stretch Saturday, Jan. 7, in a 47-40 win at Northern Illinois.  With EMU leading by one, 41-40, with under two minutes left, the EMU defense held the Huskies scoreless the rest of the way. While NIU was not posting any points, the Huskies were forced to foul and they chose the wrong player in Lampley.  The 5-foot-10 point guard calmly sank all six of his free throw attempts over the game's final 1:34 to preserve the win for the Eagles. Lampley would end up with a 16-point afternoon, including making 9-of-10 charity tosses.

DEFENSE PAYING OFF:  EMU's defensive effort this season is starting to pay big dividends for Head Coach Rob Murphy's squad. The Eagles are limiting their opponents to an average of 60.9 points a game in 2011-12, a figure that currently ranks second in the Mid-American Conference.

MOVING UP IN THE MAC STATS PICTURE:  As a team, the Eagles are in the top half of the Mid-American Conference in four categories heading into the Ball State gameSaturday, Jan. 14.  Eastern is second in scoring defense (60.9), fourth in free throw percentage (.700), sixth in 3-point field goal percentage defense (.321) and fifth in field goal percentage defense (.415).  Individually, senior point guard Darrell Lampley (Linden, N.J.-Linden-Lakeland (Ohio) C.C.) is tied for seventh in scoring (14.1) and second in free throw percentage (.873) and junior forward Jamell Harris (Euclid, Ohio-Euclid) is third in blocked shot (1.7).

MILESTONES:  Several EMU players have hit milestone or are very close after the first 16 games of the 2011-12 season.
Senior guard Antonio Green (Inkster, Mich.-Dearborn Heights Robichaud) has played in 108 games for the Eagles while earning 57 starts.  He has scored 602 points for a tie for 73rd with Brian Schubert (1973-77) in the EMU record books, and his 264 career rebounds total is good for 71st and his 107 three-point field goals is good for 13th.
Junior forward Jamell Harris (Euclid, Ohio-Euclid) is 64th in career rebounds with 299 and his 121 career blocked shots is good for second, trailing only Theron Wilson (1992-96) who had 257 career swats.

LOW TOTAL: EMU's nine-point first half at Virgina Tech, Dec. 22, is a modern-day low for an EMU men's basketball squad. The Eagles' 36-point scoring effort in a loss at Purdue, Dec. 11, was the lowest point total for an EMU men's basketball team since the then-Hurons scored 34 in a 54-34 loss in the opening game of the 1956-57 season, Dec. 5, 1956 at home against Hope.
