YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- With a season-opening 41-9 victory over Howard University under its belt, the Eastern Michigan University football team turns its attention to Alabama State University. Saturday's, Sept. 10, kickoff is scheduled for 1:06 p.m. at Rynearson Stadium.
The Eagles and the Hornets are meeting for the first time on the gridiron. In fact, Eastern Michigan has never played a team from the state of Alabama in its 120-year history. Meanwhile, Alabama State, the reigning Southwestern Athletic Conference East Division champions, will be playing its first Football Bowl Subdivision (Division I-A) opponent.
STRIVING FOR A 2-0 START: Eastern Michigan will look for its first 2-0 start to a campaign since the 1989 season, when the then-Hurons downed Kent State University, Sept. 2, and Youngstown State University, Sept. 9. That season the Eagles posted a 5-0-1 record through its first six games en route to a 7-3-1 finish.
FIRST HOME VICTORY FOR COACH ENGLISH: EMU Head Coach Ron English got to sing the fight song and celebrate a victory at home following the 32-point decision over Howard, Sept. 4. It also marked the first time under the Eagles' third-year mentor that the Green and White held a team under 250 yards of total offense, limiting the Bison to just 201 yards (96 rush; 105 pass). Conversely, Eastern Michigan rolled up 441 total yards of offense, including 326 yards rushing, and advanced into Howard territory on 10 of its 14 drives.
WINNING STREAK: The Eagles have posted a 7-3 record against Football Championship Subdivision opponents since the 2001 campaign. However, EMU is currently riding a three-game winning streak that includes a 38-15 decision over Howard, Sept. 22, 2007, a 52-0 victory over Indiana State, Aug. 28, 2008, and a 41-9 win against Howard, Sept. 4, 2011.
During the 10-game span, the Green and White have averaged 31.2 points and 416.1 total yards of offense per game, while giving up an average of 22.0 points and 356.8 yards per contest.
SHERRER-ING OFF THE BISON: Redshirt junior Dominique Sherrer rushed for 120 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries against Howard, Sept. 4, it marked his first 100-yard game for the Eagles. He came up with an electrifying 77-yard run from scrimmage to give the Eagles a comfortable 34-9 lead with 14:05 left in the third quarter. That Sherrer run, the first touchdown of his career, was the second longest for an EMU player in Rynearson Stadium-history and tied for the fifth-best single-rush effort in the EMU rushing record book.
CUDWORTH ON THE STOP: Junior Justin Cudworth's debut as an Eagle was an impressive one, as he turned in a team-high 13 tackles (5 solo, 8 assists) against Howard, Sept. 4. He also added 3.5 tackles-for-loss, a forced fumble and a quarterback hurry, as the Eagles' defense limited the Bison to just 96 yards on the ground.
For his efforts, he was selected Honorable Mention Performer of the Week by the College Football Performance Awards.
NEW BLOOD: A total of 21 EMU players saw their first-ever action for EMU during the 2011 season opener, Sept. 4, at home against Howard. Nine of those players; Tyler Allen, Dylan Brooks, Pudge Cotton, David Gibson, Kevin Johnson, Demarius Reed, Dominque Rouse,Tyreese Russell, and Darius Scott, are true freshmen and five; Campbell Allison, Lincoln Hansen, Desdan Hester, , Bobby McFadden and Julius Shelby are redshirt freshmen.
Others seeing their first action included: Justin Cudworth, Austin Karcher, Orlando McCord, Marlon Pollard, Matt Price, Blake Poole and Shawn Sinawe.
SPECIAL TEAMS SUIT HERB: Senior Herb Waits recorded six tackles (2 solo, 4 assisted) on kickoffs, as the Eagles limited Howard to an average starting position of their own 22-yard line.
WORTH THE WAIT: The Eastern Michigan University football team had to wait 17 hours to finally get on the field to play its 2011 home opener, but in the end the wait was worth it for the Eagles in a 41-9 win over Howard University Sunday, Sept. 4, in Rynearson Stadium.
Eastern and season-opening opponent Howard University both went through pre-game warmups on Saturday, Sept. 3, before a series of lightning strikes forced both teams into their respective locker rooms just after 6 p.m. The teams did not return to the field as the storm, with lightning and rain present, swept through the area for most of the evening, forcing the postponement of the game until Sept. 4.
Despite the long wait to get back on the field, the Eagles responded with a strong effort on both sides of the ball to post the 32-point win.
GILLETT MAKES A MOVE UPWARDS: Junior quarterback Alex Gillett has played in 22 games for the Eagles, earning 16 starts, but has made significant advancement in several EMU career categories. Gillett has rushed 287 times for 1,326 yards and eight touchdowns and has completed 207-of-387 passes for 2,511 yards and 18 touchdowns in those 22 games. He has recorded 592 total offensive plays (rush and pass) for 3,837 total offensive yards. He is currently ranked sixth all-time in total offensive yards, just the 14th player in school history to reach 3,000. His 207 career completions is good for the 12th spot while his 2,511 career passing yards is 11th in history and his 18 career touchdown passes is tie for ninth.
TOP TEAM IN THE MAC: Just one week in and the Eagles lead the Mid-American Conference in rushing (326.0 ypg), while ranking second in the league in total defense (201.0 ypg). Dominique Sherrer resides in the top spot for all purpose yards (190. ypg), as Justin Cudworth holds down the MAC lead in tackles-for-loss (3.50).
TWO FOR 41: The Eagles scored 41 points in the season-opening victory over Howard, Sept. 4, tying the top offensive output under Head Coach Ron English. The Eagles also posted 41 points in an overtime victory at Ball State, Oct. 16, 2010.
RARE SUNDAY AFFAIR: The weather-delayed EMU-Howard contest marked just the third time since 1932 that the Eagles had played on a Sunday. Prior to that, EMU last played a Sunday game on Sept. 26, 1976 at McNeese State University. The last home Sunday contest occurred Nov. 13, 1932, when the then-Hurons dropped a 12-6 decision to Iowa State Teachers College.
