Eagles lose fourth straight on penalty shot goal
Box Score.
ROCHESTER, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)—Another nail-biting contest ended in disappointment for the Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team, which fell, 1-0, to Oakland University Sunday evening, Sept. 4. After surrendering a penalty kick goal in the 31st minute, the Eagles failed to convert on one of their own less than a minute later.
The Eagles (0-4-1) have now lost four straight games despite playing a well-balanced match Sunday. EMU fired 12 shots with six shots on goal. Cara Cutaia and Stephanie Clarke each registered a pair of shots on goal, with Angela Vultaggio accounting for four shots and one on target.
Anchored by junior Jessica Thomas and freshman Emily Dzik, Eastern Michigan's young defensive core held Oakland (1-4-0) to just four shots on goal and blocked two kicks. Goalkeeper Maggie Manville made three saves.
The two teams combined for 23 fouls in the match, as EMU committed a season-high 12 infractions. Oakland's Savanna Ferns was issued a yellow card in the 88th minute.
Oakland took a 1-0 lead in the 31st minute on a penalty kick off the foot of Nicole DeLuca.
Less than a minute later, EMU was awarded a penalty kick of its own as Clarke was fouled inside the 16-yard rectangle. Clarke's bid for her first goal of the season fell short as OU goalkeeper Paij O'Shea came up with the save.
The Green and White headed into halftime with a 4-2 advantage in shots on goal but still trailed by one.
Both teams had their fair share of scoring chances during the second half, but the respective goalies were up to the task of making several critical stops. O'Shea prevented the Eagles from tying the contest with saves on consecutive shots from Cutaia. Manville kept EMU within striking distance with a save on Alyssa Fulton in the 77th minute.
The Eagles will complete their six-game road swing with a trip to Bowling Green, Ky. to battle Western Kentucky University Sunday, Sept. 11, at 1 p.m.
