Eagles Drop Road Match in Five Sets at Central Michigan

Eastern fell to 1-2 in their Mid-American Conference slate after the loss to CMU

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's volleyball team dropped their third conference match of the season, Thursday, Sept. 29, at Central Michigan when they fell 3-2. The Eagles picked up the opening two sets 26-24 and 25-22, but the victory eluded Eastern as they dropped the final three frames 25-27, 16-25, 9-15.
With the loss EMU fell to 13-4 (1-2 MAC) on the season while the Chippewas improved their record to 8-6 (1-2 MAC).
Paige Roback (Maumee, Ohio-Notre Dame Academy) paced the Eagles' offense with 16 kills and a .351 attack percentage (16-3-37) in the loss. The Green and White had two other athletes with double-digit kills as both Kristen Baker (Mentor, Ohio- Mentor) and Rachel Iaquaniello (Plymouth, Mich.-Dearborn Divine Child) each had 13 kills against the Chips. Megan Crawshaw (Mattawan, Mich.-Mattawan) set another career-high in her first season with seven kills. Ashley Mason (Eastlake, Ohio-Lake Catholic) setup the Eastern offense with 49 assists, while Haley Stein (Carleton, Mich.-Monroe St. Mary's Catholic Central) had a team-high 24 digs in the loss.
The Eagles opened up the match with a 26-24 win in the opening set as they took a one-set lead over Central Michigan. Roback led the EMU offense with six kills, going 6-of-12 in attack attempts, while Crawshaw was a perfect 2-for-2 in the opening frame. Mason was able to get 15 assists in the first set.
The Green and White took a two-set lead after topping the Chippewas 25-22 in the second frame. Baker paced Eastern's offense with four kills in the opening set while Erin Short (Orrville, Ohio-Orrville), Iaquaniello and Roback each added three kills.
CMU was able to gain ground in the third set as they topped Eastern 27-25 to make the score 2-1. Crawshaw and Roback each chipped-in with four kills in the third set and Short, Iaquaniello and Baker each had a pair of kills for the Eagles.
The Chippewas evened things up at two-sets each when they took the fourth set 25-16. The fourth frame was led by Baker who picked up four kills, while Mason added nine more assists to her total.
Eastern dropped the fifth set 9-15 to fall to Central. The Eagles were unable to top CMU's .444 attack percentage (11-3-18) en route to their second MAC loss of the season.
The Eagles head into their second home match of the season Saturday, Oct. 1, when they play host to the 2010 Mid-American Conference Champions from Ohio University. Eastern and the Bobcats hit the floor for first-serve at 7 p.m. at the Convocation Center in Ypsilanti, Mich.
