AKRON, Ohio (EMUEagles.com)— The Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team surrendered a trio of second half goals to fall to the University of Akron, 3-0, Sunday afternoon, Sept. 25. The loss marks eight straight setbacks and a fifth consecutive shutout.

Ashley Hughes scored her third of the season to open the scoring for Akron in the 54th minute. Kelly DeNiro notched her second in the 67th minute and Alexandra Frawley added her first with seven minutes to play.

The Eagles (0-8-1; 0-2-0 MAC) were held to just three shots on goal (eight total shots), while the Zips (4-3-1; 1-0-1 MAC) scored three or more goals in a game for the second time this season.

Maggie Manville made eight saves on 11 Akron shots on goal.

Akron was responsible for the game's first scoring threat after a Chelsea Detrick yellow card in the sixth minute. Manville made several big saves in the following minutes, and EMU defenders thwarted a Zips corner kick.

Eastern Michigan responded with several good opportunities of its own in the 14th minute. Zips goalie Jeny Wolbert deflected a Katie Marsh shot out of bounds to set up an EMU corner kick. Stephanie Clarke directed the ball to the goal where Jessica Thomas headed a shot just over the net.

Manville kept the game scoreless for the Eagles near the half-hour mark with another pair of saves to run her total to five in the opening 45 minutes.

The Zips wasted little time breaking the deadlock in the second half as Hughes scored on a deflected free kick from seven yards out as the result of an EMU foul.

Minutes later, DeNiro stuffed a long ball from 25 yards inside the left post to make it 2-0 for Akron. Frawley added the insurance marker at 83 minutes with a header off a corner kick from Kirsten Schulte.

The Green and White did not register a shot on goal in the second half.

The Eagles return home to host Kent State University Friday afternoon, Sept. 30, at Scicluna Field. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
