EMU heads to Oakland to face the Grizzlies Sunday
Box Score.
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (EMUEagles.com)— The Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team fell just short of securing its first win of 2011 Friday, Sept. 2, following a 2-1 loss to Butler University. The match was tied until the 90th minute when the Bulldogs tallied the go-ahead goal.
For the Eagles (0-3-1), freshman Emily Dzik scored her first-career goal in the 74th minute and goalkeeper Maggie Manville made five saves.
With the win, the Bulldogs improved to 3-2-0 on the season.
Butler struck first when Rachel Scott scored her first of the season from Lucy Chauvi and Jackie Hafele in the 28th minute. The Eagles had several quality scoring opportunities immediately following the opening goal, as a shot from Chelsea Detrick was denied by Butler goalkeeper Natalie Galovska and a Jessica Thomas attempt off a corner kick was sent high over the net.
Then in the 73rd minute, a blocked shot of the foot of Leah Schmitz resulted in another EMU corner kick. Stephanie Clarke sent the ball to Cara Cutaia who passed it along to Dzik at the top of the penalty area. Dzik fired a shot which Galovska deflected, but not enough to prevent the ball from rolling into the back of the net. The score was tied, 1-1.
Just when it appeared overtime was all but certain, Hafele headed a corner kick from Stephanie Kaylor past Manville in the final minute of play to give Butler the 2-1 win.
The Green and White now head back to the Great Lakes State for a Sunday, Sept. 4, matchup with Oakland University in Rochester, Mich. at 7 p.m.
