The former Michigan standout will join the Eagles staff as the pitching and catching coach
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Former Concordia University Softball Head Coach and University of Michigan standout Marissa Young has been named Assistant Coach of the Eastern Michigan University softball program announced Head Coach Karen Baird today, August 29.
Young will work primarily with the Eagles' pitching staff, and her previous experience and expertise in the circle should prove valuable for the youthful EMU rotation.
“I am very excited for Marissa to be joining the EMU softball family,” said Baird. “Our pitchers will learn a great deal about competitiveness and work ethic from her. With her previous experiences as an elite athlete and a head coach, I know she will help take not only our pitching staff, but our entire team to another level.”
“I am thrilled to become apart of the EMU coaching staff,” said Young. “Coaching at the highest level at a great school like Eastern Michigan University and being able to stay in town is a dream come true. I am really looking forward to being able to focus on the development of the pitchers and catchers and to bring home a MAC Championship.“
Young previously served three seasons as Head Coach at Concordia in Ann Arbor. In her first year at the helm, the Santa Ana, Calif. native helped guide a young Cardinals squad to the second most wins in a single season since their 2002 NAIA National Tournament run.
Prior to coaching, Young was a standout player at the University of Michigan. During her career, she showcased her talent on both sides of the field, garnering Big Ten Conference Pitcher of the Year accolades in 2002 and Big Ten Player of the Year honors in 2003. A three-time All-American selection, Young finished her prominent career for the Maize and Blue as the all-time strikeout leader (927), and her 88 career wins became the second-best mark in program history. Offensively, Young matched the then-program's single season home run record after drilling 13 round-trippers in 2003.
