YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) —
The Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team kicked-off the 2011-12 EMU sports schedule Saturday afternoon, Aug. 13, with a 1-0 exhibition setback to the Michigan State University Spartans at Scicluna Field.  The contest remained scoreless until the 53rd minute, when Kelsey Kassab fired a shot from just beyond the penalty area to beat Rachel Rye.

Eastern Michigan's defense was busy throughout the match, as MSU recorded 29 shots, five of which were on goal. EMU defenders blocked 10 shots to deny several quality Spartans scoring chances. The Eagles put three of their nine total shots on goal, but were unable to put anything past MSU goalkeepers.

Head Coach Scott Hall played 19 of his 21 athletes Saturday, including seven-of-nine freshmen. In her first collegiate action, forward Angela Vultaggio played 58 minutes and tallied a team-leading three shots, one on target. Vultaggio, Bianca Rossi, and Emily Dzik made up the trio of freshmen to earn a spot in the starting lineup.

Goalkeepers Rye and freshman Anna Vess each saw playing time, with both keepers making one save.

Both teams had scoring chances early in the game, but strong defense in front of the goal on each end kept the ball out of the net. That remained the theme until an EMU foul resulted in a free kick just ahead of the box. Kassab's kick found its way through a crowd in front of the goal and skipped past a diving Rye just inside the left goalpost.

The Eagles made several charges late in the contest, but the Spartans kept EMU attackers largely to the outside and away from the goal.

Saturday's exhibition was the lone tune-up for the Green and White, as the 2011 regular season gets underway Friday, Aug. 19, when EMU travels to Pittsburgh, Pa. to take on the University of Pittsburgh. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
