LOUISVILLE, Ky. (EMUEagles.com)
– The Eastern Michigan University baseball team posted its 11th straight victory and 30th win of the season after sweeping the University of Louisville in a two-game set, culminating with a 6-2 victory at Jim Patterson Stadium, today, May 4.

They say good teams take advantage of golden opportunities and that's exactly what the Eagles did when they put up six unearned runs that stemmed from a pair of Cardinal errors in the top of the third inning. Sam Ott (Canton, Mich.-Salem) provided the big hit with a bases-clearing three-run double down the right field line.

It was all EMU needed as starter Jordan Glover (Toronto, Ont.-Ontario Schools) went six strong innings, allowing just two runs on eight hits while striking out two and walking none. Neil Butara (Euclid, Ohio-St. Ignatius), Collin Taylor (Cincinnati, Ohio-Lakota West) and Kristian Calibuso (Brandon, Fla.-Armwood-Florida State College at Jacksonville) allowed just one hit combined over the final three innings to seal the victory.

Offensively, eight of the nine position starters recorded at least one hit for the Eagles in the contest. Zack Leonard (Canton, Ohio-McKinley) extended his hitting streak to 12 games and his consecutive reached base streak to 21 straight by going 2-for-5. Kyle Klein (Grand Rapids, Mich.-West Catholic) also totaled two hits with a 2-for-4 effort. Louisville's Ryan Wright went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, but EMU ended up out-hitting the Cardinals, 10-9.

With the win the Eagles improved to 30-15 overall and notched 11 straight victories for the first time since 2004 and one win shy of the all-time consecutive wins record of 12, which occurred back in their NAIA National Championship season in 1970. Louisville falls to 25-20 with the loss.

Like in game one on Tuesday, Louisville took the game's first lead with a first inning run. After a double by Wright, Stewart Ijames followed with an RBI single to left field to put the Cardinals up 1-0.

The Eagles recorded two hits apiece in each of the first two innings, but couldn't put anything together until the third when they scored six runs on four hits in an inning aided by two Louisville errors.

Brent Ohrman (Adrian, Mich.-Adrian) led the frame off with a walk and advanced all the way to third when a double play opportunity was botched on Leonard's fielder's choice for the first error. The second miscue came on the very next play as Ben Magsig (Okemos, Mich.-Okemos-Lansing C.C.) grounded into a fielder's choice that the first baseman couldn't handle.

It was the second straight day that consecutive errors have doomed the Cardinals after the Eagles took advantage of a similar situation in a four-run eighth inning during game one of the series yesterday.

After Magsig reached, Daniel Russell (Grandville, Mich.-Grandville) coaxed a walk which loaded the bases for the Eagles. With one out and the bases still loaded, Ott stepped to the plate and delivered a first-pitch double down the right field line to bring in all three runs to give the Eagles a 4-1 advantage.

Klein then singled to put runners on the corners before Ken Battiston (West Milton, Ohio-Milton Union) followed with an RBI single to the shortstop to give EMU a 5-1 edge. Ohrman made it 6-1 with a single to left to score Klein before Leonard's fly out ended the inning.

Louisville scored a run in the bottom of the third to pull within 6-2 and wouldn't get another scoring chance for the remainder of the game thanks to stellar relief pitching by the Green and White.

Butara allowed a hit in an inning and a third before Taylor got the final out of the eighth after getting Ijames to foul out to the third base side. Calibuso then pitched a perfect ninth by getting all three hitters to pop out to the right side.

EMU jumps back into Mid-American Conference play this weekend when it hosts Northern Illinois University in a three-game series at Oestrike Stadium, May 6-8. First pitch Friday is slated for 6 p.m.
