Hemingway Advances to Nationals with First-Place Pole Vault

Williams, White, Elcock all miss out on chances at nationals in individual events

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – Jessica Hemingway showed why she is one of the top pole vaulters in the nation Thursday, May 26, as the senior not only won her heat, but tied for the best pole vault of the day for the Eastern Michigan University track and field team as four athletes competed on day one of the 2011 NCAA Track and Field Outdoor East Regional Prelims today in Indianapolis, Ind.
Hemingway cleared a height of 13-01.50 without a foul, as she coasted to the top spot in the field of 48. With the mark, Hemingway now advances to compete at the NCAA National Championship for a chance to compete for a national championship and NCAA All-American honors.
Shantavia Williams, running in the 400-meter dash, finished in fourth place in her heat, just one spot of an automatic qualifier spot. Her time of 55.99 was just outside of the final six qualifying times. Beverly Elcock and Rosie White each suffered the same fate in the 800-meter run and the long jump, respectively, as Elcock's time of 2:08.61 was fifth in her heat and White's mark of 18-07.00 was 11th in her flight.
Ashlee Abraham will and the 4x400-meter relay team are still slated to compete this weekend for the Eagles, as the team hopes to advance to nationals in those two events to join Hemingway on June 8-11.
