INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's and women's track and field programs will begin competition at the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field East Regional today, May 26, in Indianapolis, Ind.
Competing on the men's side for the Eagles, two seniors, one sophomore and two freshmen will flex their muscles on the national stage. Co-captains Clint Allen and Andrew Meyer will represent the Eagles in the 100-meter dash and the shot put, respectively, while second-year man and reigning three-time Mid-American Conference Most Valuable Performer Terefe Ejigu will run in the 5,000-meter race. Freshman Donald Scott's stellar performance in the triple jump event earned him a spot at the East Regionals, and Max Babits, another first-year man, cleared a height of 16-04.75 in the pole vault to earn the regional qualifier nod.
For the EMU women, the team sends competitors in six different events. Sophomore speedster Ashlee Abraham will compete in the 200-meter dash after qualifying with a time of 23.86. In the 400-meter dash, Shantavia Williams will run in a field deep with SEC competition. In the 800-meter run, Beverly Elcock will be running, while both Elcock and Williams will also comprise half of the 4x400-meter relay squad. They will be joined by Dejaa Shearer and Asia Rawls.
Rosie White and Jessica Hemingway, in the triple jump and pole vault, respectively, will be the field competitors for the Eagles.
Top finishers in each flight, plus the other top overall finishers will advance to nationals.
