With the win, Kent State moves to 18-10 overall, 6-1 in MAC play while the Eastern Michigan drops to 18-11 (5-2 MAC).
Wendzicki (3-3), who entered the contest with victories in each of his first two league starts this year, got out of a two-on and two-out jam in the first before retiring the side in the second frame. In the third, he ran into a little trouble, giving up a leadoff double to Derek Toadvine before hitting the next batter Joe Koch.
After a sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third, Shaw stepped up and made it a 2-0 game with a two-run single to left field. Shaw finished 3-for-4 on the day with two RBI.
The Eagles got one of those runs back in their next at-bat as the top of the order, namely Brent Ohrman, came through with a leadoff single. The junior advanced to second on a throwing error by the first baseman and eventually scored from third on an RBI single by Zack Leonard.
Kent State responded in their half of the fourth with as another double to leadoff the inning, this time by David Lyon, produced a run. Jason Bagoly made it back-to-back doubles as he scorched one to left to bring Lyon around to score. Bagoly recorded a multi-hit game, finishing 2-for-3.
The Eagles again made it a one run game when Ohrman's RBI groundout scored Dae Bowden, who reached with a one out single earlier in the inning. Ohrman tallied three hits for his 13th multi-hit game of the season, finishing 3-for-4 in the contest with an RBI and a run scored.
Chafin and Wendzicki settled down during the next two innings, each retiring the side in the sixth. Chafin retired the side on four separate occasions and struck out the side in the seventh inning in the midst of retiring nine straight batters.
In the Kent State eighth, another leadoff double led to a Golden Flashes run as Jimmy Rider did the damage this time. Travis Shaw followed with a single which advanced Rider to third. Rider scored when the next batter, Ben Klafcynski, hit into a double play. Wendzicki then struck out Lyon to end the inning.
Trailing 4-2 in the ninth, the Eagles got the leadoff man on when Chafin plunked Leonard. After striking out Wally Gerbus and Tucker Rubino in consecutive batters, Matt Hitt smacked a two-out single to center field and that was the end for Chafin as McMillen came in to close it out.
The first batter he faced, Bowden, grounded into a fielder's choice to end the threat and the game.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow in game two as EMU's Corey Chaffins will go up against KSU's Kyle Hallock in a 1 p.m. start at Schoonover Stadium.
