Women Take First and Men Take Third at Toledo Collegiate Invite

Women get eight wins while the men rack up five

TOLEDO, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's track team finished first overall, while the men's team finished third, as the teams competed in the Sixth Annual Toledo Collegiate Challenge at among other Mid-American Conference teams as well as local non-conference squads.
The women combined to take first place in eight of the 20 events, while then men won five events and placed second in five others.
The pole vault catapulted the Eagles into an early advantage as the women finished 1-2-3 in the event, as senior Jessica Novakowski took the top spot. Freshman Shnell Wishart kept the momentum going as she won the triple jump and was second in the long jump.
Asia Rawls was a three-time winner on the day. Rawls won both the 400-meter run and the 400-meter hurdles with times of 57.67 and 1:01.39. She returned to help the 4x400-meter relay team win first place during the women's final race of the day.
The Quaintance sisters, Lauren and Rachel, had successful days at the track as older sister Lauren won the 800 and younger sister Rachel ran a 10:10.42 to win the 3,000-meter race.
Sophomore Ashlee Abraham was able to continue her dominance as well, as she won the 200-meter dash, edging out her racing rival, Bowling Green State University's Jeanette Pettigrew, with a time of 25.16.
On the men's side, freshman Max Babits and senior Andrew Meyer reigned supreme in the field, as Babits won the pole vault and Meyer took first place in the shot put.
Newcomer Brycen Spratling picked up where he left off after capturing MAC gold, by winning his first collegiate outdoor 400-meter dash with a time of 47.89. He also took second place in the 200-meter dash. Spratling also team with Chris Scott, Clint Allen and Jairus Saunders as the quartet won the 4x100-meter dash with a time of 41.11.
Team captain Matt Hammersmith was stellar in the 2,000-meter steeplechase, running the race in a time of 6:09.78 to win the event.
The women will be back on the track and in the field April 8-9 for the Miami Invitational in Oxford, Ohio, while the men are back in action April 16 at the Florida International.
