The EMU baseball team won its first MAC road series after escaping Bowling Green with a 5-4 win, Sunday.
Box Score
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – Sophomore Kristian Calibuso came on in a one run game in the bottom of the ninth and, with the bases loaded and two outs, got the final batter to fly out to left to give the Eastern Michigan University baseball team a thrilling, 5-4, Mid-American Conference win and series victory over the Bowling Green State University Falcons at Steller Field, today, April 3.
Trailing 2-1, the Eagles scored two runs in the fifth and one in each the eighth and ninth innings to stave off a furious Falcon comeback in the bottom of the ninth.
Calibuso's impressive effort in the ninth secured the win for sophomore starter Steve Weber (3-2), who went eight strong innings, allowing just two runs on five hits. Ben Magsig, Tucker Rubino and Dae Bowden each tallied two hits for the Eagles while Rubino and Bowden also added an RBI.
With the win, EMU improves to 18-10 overall, 5-1 in the MAC, while BGSU falls to 9-13 (3-3 MAC).
Weber allowed two runs on a trio of hits in the first inning, each run coming on a Jon Berti RBI single and a Clay Duncan sacrifice fly, respectively.
The right-hander would settle down after that, not allowing another run while surrendering just three hits thereafter.
Meanwhile, the EMU offense chipped away, getting one run back in its half of the second inning on a Rubino groundout which scored Zack Leonard. The Eagles then took the lead in the fifth after scoring a pair. Magsig and Rubino led the inning off with a single each before Ken Battiston drove them both home a few batters later with a two-run single to right field.
BGSU starter Charles Wooten (1-4) saw his day come to an end after the hit by Battiston. The right-hander lasted just 4.2 innings, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out six and walking just one.
Eastern would pad its lead in the eighth. Bowden led off the frame as a pinch-hitter with a double to left and eventually came around to score on a fielding error by the shortstop on Rubino's grounder, giving the Eagles a 4-2 lead.
The lead would grow to 5-2 an inning later thanks to another key hit by Bowden. The sophomore singled through the right side to score Daniel Russell from second base.
Weber exited with a comfortable three-run lead, allowing Joe Battistelli to come in relief for the save. The sophomore struggled from the get-go, surrendering a leadoff double to Ryan Schlater, who finished the game 3-for-4 with a run scored. Alex Davison then singled and Frank Berry drew a walk to load the bases before Andrew Kabuski made it a one run game with a two-run single to center.
Head Coach Jay Alexander then made the call to bring Calibuso in to try and close it out with two on and nobody out. The first-year Eagle came through, getting the first out on a sacrifice bunt to advance runners to second and third base and the second out with a clutch strikeout of Patrick Lancaster.
With two outs, they decided to intentionally walk Berti to load the bases. Down to their final out and the winning run on second, Matt Pitzulo came to the plate. After a first pitch strike, Pitzulo lifted a fly ball to left field, but right into the glove of Russell to end the game.
Calibuso recorded his second save of the season and closed out a road series victory for the Eagles.
EMU will be back in action this Wednesday, April 6, to take on Michigan State at 3 p.m. The Eagles will then travel to Kent State for a three-game set April 8-10.
