Eastern's Miriam Westerink earns All-MAC second team honors

– Eastern Michigan University hosted the annual Mid-American Conference women's tennis banquet in the atrium of the Convocation Center Thursday, April 28, to honor coaches and players for their efforts during the 2010-11 season.

Among the awards issued were All-MAC first and second team, Freshman of the Year, Leann Grimes Davidge Sportsmanship Award, Player of the Year, and Coach of the Year. All of the conference seniors were also recognized at the banquet as well.

Eastern Michigan sophomore Miriam Westerink was the lone Eagle to receive a conference honor on the season as she was named to the All-MAC second team for her outstanding 2010-11 season. On the year she notched 17 wins, including eight wins in singles play and nine in doubles.

Miami University took home a plethora of awards following the team's 8-0 conference record on the season. Anastasia Dracheva and Stephanie Danesis were each named to the All-MAC first team, while Megan Martzolf earned All-MAC second team honors, and Head Coach Anca Dumitrescu got the nod for Coach of the Year.

Christina Chiricosta, of Bowling Green, and Diana Popescu, of Buffalo, shared the Leann Grimes Davidge Sportsmanship Award, and each was also named to the All-MAC first team.

Along with Miami, Akron also landed three student-athletes on the All-Conference squad as Zara Harutyunyan picked up first team honors along with the highly-coveted Player of the Year award. Angelika Jogasuri and Prang Pantusart were named to the All-MAC second team for the Zips.

Western Michigan's Nina Sujashvili and Maggie Remynse were All-Conference additions, as Sujashvili rounded out the first team, while Remynse was named to the second team. Finishing up the second team nods was Toledo's Ashley Frey.

Ball State kicked off the tournament today with a 4-0 win over Northern Illinois in the No. 8-No. 9, opening-round matchup. Ball State moves onto the quarterfinals to face the No. 1 seed regular season MAC Champion Miami RedHawks on Friday, April 29, at 10 a.m. As of now, all matches are slated to be played outdoors at their scheduled sites, but are subject to change depending on the weather.
