WALNUT, Calif. (EMUEagles.com) – Jessica Hemingway is no stranger to the Eastern Michigan University women's track and field record book, and the senior pole vaulter made sure that it was not unfamiliar with her as well.
Competing among more than 14,000 elite athletes at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif. over the weekend, the senior co-captain broke her own school record by clearing a height of 13-11.25. The height currently stands as the eighth-best in the nation this year. Hemingway also broke the school indoor record earlier this year at the Silverston Invitational at University of Michigan by clearing a height of 13-07.25 in the pole vault.
Ashlee Abraham had the Eagles' other top-10 finish as she placed eighth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.96. Abraham teamed with Naomi Andre, Asia Rawls and Shantavia Williams in the 4x400-meter relay to nab an 11th-place finish with a time of 3:48.12. Rawls competed in two other events as she placed 14th in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:01.15, and 19th in the 400-meter dash with a time of 55.29. Williams placed a few spots higher (14th) in the same race, turning in a time of 54.77.
Rachel Quaintance, who was recently named to the Academic All-Mid-American Conference team, ran an impressive 10,000-meter race, finishing in the middle of a deep field with a time of 36:19.51. Kate Wolanin turned in the 20th-best mark in the high-jump, recording a jump of 5-03.00.
Eastern Michigan will be back in competition on Friday and Saturday, April 22-23, as it plays host to the EMU Twilight.
