AVON, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – A five-run 10th inning broke a 2-2 tie and propelled the Eastern Michigan University baseball team to a 7-2 non-conference victory over Cleveland State University at All Pro Freight Stadium, Tuesday, April 12.

With the scored tied at 2-2, the Eagles strung together five runs on a trio of hits, three walks and a hit batsman en route to the 7-2 victory. The win overcame a home loss to their Green and White counterparts from earlier this season as the Vikings left Oestrike Stadium with a 2-1 win March 29.

The top-four batters in the Eagle lineup acted as a driving force in the win, going 7-for-16 combined at the dish. Meanwhile, Jordan Glover (Toronto, Ont.-Ontario Schools) put together a strong outing after allowing two runs on six hits without a single walk, but settled for the no-decision. Sophomore Brian Valente (Macomb, Mich.-Eisenhower-Saginaw Valley State) earned the win in relief with 3.2 innings of shutout, no-hit baseball. Reliever Travis Miller took the loss for CSU.

With the win, EMU improves to 19-13 overall while the Vikings drop to 6-23 on the season.

The Eagles and Vikings each put a run on the board in the first inning. For EMU, a failed stolen base attempt by their second-leading base stealer, Ken Battiston (West Milton, Ohio-Milton Union), may have hindered a big inning from occurring. Despite the fact, they still mustered a run across after Brent Ohrman (Adrian, Mich.-Adrian), who reached with a hit by pitch, came around to score on Robert Wendzicki's (Brook Park, Ohio-Midpark) RBI single to right to give the Eagles an early 1-0 advantage.

The Vikings then tied the game with Tyler Wynn's RBI groundout, scoring Alex Johnson, who led off the inning with a single to left.

EMU retook the lead in the third. After Ohrman led off the inning with a single and stole second to get into scoring position, Zack Leonard (Canton, Ohio-McKinley) tallied the first of his two hits in the contest as he singled through the right side to bring Ohrman around to score.

In the bottom of the frame, Glover held the Vikings at bay despite giving up a double and a single to the first two hitters. He got the next batter, Matt Kirkwood, to line into a double play and then struck out Anthony Sambula to end the inning.

Looking to extend their lead in the sixth, sophomore Dae Bowden (Chicago, Ill.-Whitney Young) came to the plate with a runner on and connected with a deep drive to left off right-hander Nate Blankemeyer, but Sambula went back and robbed Bowden of a two-run homerun.

Not only did he take runs off the board, but Sambula also contributed in the rally which tied the game in the next half inning. After Wynn was hit by a pitch and then stole second, Sambula executed a perfect bunt single down the third base line to put runners at the corners with one out. After a pitching change, Jason Haditcsch drew the two-out walk against Valente to bring in Wynn and tie the score at 2-2.

Valente went on to retire the next 10 batters he faced before the Eagles came up in the 10th and untied the score with a five-run game-winning rally. A Tucker Rubino (Scottsdale, Ariz.-Horizon-Glendale C.C.) one out bases loaded walk broke the tie and a Wally Gerbus (Fairfield, Ohio-Stephen T. Baden) sacrifice fly, a wild pitch and a Aaron Chavez (Milpitas, Calif.-Milpitas-Ohlone College) RBI single to center added some insurance for Kristian Calibuso (Brandon, Fla.-Armwood-Florida State College at Jacksonville), who closed it out with a perfect bottom of the 10th.

The Eagles will be back in action this weekend as they return home for a three-game Mid-American Conference cross-divisional series with the University of Akron Zips. Friday's game, originally scheduled for 6 p.m., has been moved up to a 3 p.m. start at Oestrike Stadium. Each contest on Saturday and Sunday remain 1 p.m. starts.
