Box Score
KENT, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – Kent State University took the final game of the series en route to a sweep over the Eastern Michigan University baseball team, defeating the Eagles, 8-5, in Mid-American Conference play today, April 10, at Schoonover Stadium.
The Eagles were swept for the first time this season despite taking an early lead with a first inning run against the Golden Flashes on Sunday. Pitching dominated the series and each Kent State starter was credited with a win including David Starn, who moves to 5-1 on the season after going six and third innings and allowing just two runs on six hits while striking out five and walking two. Kyle McMillen picked up his eighth save of the season, getting the final out of the contest.
EMU starter Steve Weber fell to 3-3 on the year after allowing three runs (2 earned) on five hits over three and two-thirds innings. The Golden Flashes out-hit the Eagles 13-11, led by David Lyon's 3-for-5 effort. He and Travis Shaw each tallied solo homeruns in the contest.
EMU's Ken Battiston also went 3-for-5 while Tucker Rubino recorded a 3-for-4 performance with his first homerun of the year and Zack Leonard a 2-for-4 effort with three RBI.
Eastern Michigan falls to 18-13 on the season, 5-4 in league play while Kent State improves to 20-10 (8-1 MAC) after winning their ninth straight game and sweeping their second straight MAC series.
The Eagles cracked the scoreboard earlier as the senior Battiston doubled to left to leadoff the game. He would score the game's first run on a Leonard sacrifice fly.
After going quietly in their first inning, Kent State responded with a run in the second to tie it. Weber issued a walk to Ben Klafczynski and a single to Lyon before Jason Bagoly lifted a sacrifice fly to center to even the score.
With the score still tied heading into the fourth inning, Lyon untied it with a leadoff homer to right to give the Golden Flashes a 2-1 lead.
The hosts would add one more in that frame which would start a string of five straight run-scoring innings, building the lead to a commanding 8-2 margin.
The Eagles scored three runs in the ninth, but it wasn't nearly enough as the deficit proved insurmountable.
Eastern Michigan will travel to Cleveland State on Tuesday, April 12, looking to avenge a loss at home from earlier this season. Akron awaits the Eagles in their next league series as the Zips make the trip to Ypsilanti for three games April 15-17.
