GREAT EXPECTATIONS: Eastern Michigan University will head to DeKalb, Ill. with nothing to lose and a chip on its shoulder after coming up short in each of its five Mid-American Conference dual meets this season. Four Eagles were ranked in the conference's final coaches poll. Nick Whitenburg is third at 197 while Nick Hendrick (165), Chris Eggert (174) and David Wade (HWT) are each ranked fourth in their respective weight classes.
As a team, the Eagles will head to DeKalb, Ill. projected to finish sixth with five points, four points behind tournament host Northern Illinois University which has nine points. The Chippewas enter the weekend as nine-time reigning MAC Champs, but go in projected to finish second with 23 points to Kent State which goes in projected to garner 27 points. Ohio was projected to finish third with 19 points followed by Buffalo in fourth with 17 points.
Each school was ranked based on the number of first through fourth-place votes turned in by the head coaches.
BLAST FROM THE PAST: The last time Eastern Michigan captured the MAC title was back in 1995-96 when it pulled off the underdog upset after going just 1-4 in the MAC regular season. Since then, the Green and White have finished in fifth or sixth place each year except in 2005 when the Eagles wound up tied for fourth.
“Winning the MAC Title would be a very difficult task, but I would never throw it out of the realm of possibilities,” said Head Coach Derek DelPorto on the possibility of another underdog performance. “Our mentality this week is one match at a time and leave everything out there. It's win or be done, and nobody on this team is ready for his season to be finished.“
Last season, five wrestlers placed at the 2010 MAC Championship for EMU. Sean Clair at 133 took fourth and David Wade at heavyweight placed second to qualify for nationals, while Alex Ortman (4th at 165), Phillip Joseph (4th at 184) and Justin Brandel (5th at 174) also placed in their respective divisions.
UNDER-APPRECIATED: The NCAA has awarded the Mid-American Conference with 18 of the 282 automatic bids to the Division I National Championship in Philadelphia, Pa, March 18-20, four fewer bids than the MAC was awarded a year ago. This includes one spot at 125 lbs., two at 133 lbs., one at 141 lbs. and 149 lbs., three at 157 lbs., one at 165, two at 174 lbs., one at 184, two at 197 lbs., and four at heavyweight.
“That's a very low number for the talent pool in this conference,” DelPorto said. “We had so many wrestlers in our conference on the bubble of qualifying for a slot, but came up just short leaving five weight classes this weekend where the champion is the only automatic bid to the NCAA Championships. “Bottom line, you have to be the best you can be for two days in a row!“
The Big Ten Conference was granted more automatic bids than any other conference with 64. The Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association garnered the second-most bids with 46, followed by the Big 12 Conference which will get 33. Also, there will be 48 at-large bids awarded following a meeting of the NCAA Division I Wrestling Committee, March 9. The selections will be made based on the following criteria: head-to-head competition; qualifying event placement; quality wins; results against common opponents; winning percentage; RPI; coaches ranking and the number of matches contested at that weight class. All weight classes will consist of 33 wrestlers.
YOUNG BLOOD: Eastern Michigan has a young and exciting group of talented grapplers this season, featuring four freshmen regularly in its starting lineup and as many as five on occasion. Seven Eagles in all will be making their MAC Championship debuts, including: freshman Jared Germaine (125), junior Filliberto Colon (133), freshman Mike LeHolm (141), senior Nick Hendrick (165), sophomore Chris Eggert (174), freshman Khodor Hoballah (184) and freshman Nick Whitenburg (197).
“We will have four freshmen, two sophomores, two juniors and two seniors competing this weekend. It is very exciting for the future of our program,” DelPorto said. “We will have virtually everyone back next year and again the following year. I told these young guys to go out there and make a name for yourself now...don't wait until you are a senior.”
THE FINAL COUNTDOWN: Two seniors don the Green and White this year in Nick Hendrick and David Wade. Wade will be vying for his second trip to nationals while Hendrick is eyeing his first.
“I think Nick and David could and have the ability to each win their weight classes if things go right,” DelPorto said of his senior leaders. “If they truly believe in themselves on Saturday and Sunday, things should go very well for them.
“No matter what happens, I am proud of them and thankful for their loyalty and passion throughout the years.”
