DETROIT, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)
— Junior outfielder McKenna Russ (North Canton, Ohio-Hoover) went 9-for-9 at the plate including two multi-home run performances to help the Eastern Michigan University softball team secure a midweek doubleheader sweep over the Detroit Titans this afternoon, March 29, at Buysse Ballpark in Detroit, Mich.

The Eagles hammered out 30 hits in two games as they improve to 13-5 on the year, winning the first game, 8-0, and capturing a 15-7 victory in the nightcap.

EMU totaled 15 hits the first contest, with four players registering multi-hit performances. Russ went 4-for-4 at the plate, sending two over the outfield fence for the first multi-home run game in her career. The junior also knocked in four runs and scored twice for the Eagles.

This week's Mid-American Conference West Division Player of the Week, Stacie Skodinski (South Bend, Ind.-Washington), hit safely for the sixth consecutive game with a 3-for-4 offensive outing for the Green and White. The South Bend, Ind. native recorded her 21st career home run to move her into third on the all-time EMU career homerun list.

The Eagles put their first run on the board in the top of the second after Russ hammered a solo home run over the right field fence.

EMU manufactured another two runs in the third to swell the Eagles' advantage over the Titans to three.
Lauren Delapaz (Plymouth, Mich.-Canton) started the rally with a one-out single and was eventually brought in on a sacrifice fly by Sarah Gerber (North Canton, Ohio-Hoover). With two outs, Russ singled to center field to knock in Skodinski who doubled in the previous at bat, bringing the score to 3-0.

Skodinski started the fifth inning with a one-out solo shot to right field. With two outs, Russ stepped to the plate and hammered her second round tripper of the day, this time to the opposite field to bring the Eagles lead to five. Back-to-back singles by Kayla Kostich (Taylor, Mich.-Cabrini) and Courtney Nicholson (Navarre, Ohio-Canton Central Catholic) put runners at first and second, setting up an RBI-single for Nellie Coquillard (Niles, Mich.-Niles). With two outs, Allison Scherer (Stow, Ohio-Stow) was called in to pinch hit. The junior drove an RBI single down the left field line to complete the Eagles offensive attack and put the Green and White up, 7-0.

With Russ' RBI-double in the sixth, the Eagles jumped to an eight-run advantage, a lead that they would never relinquish as they pulled away with the 8-0 game one victory.

Jenna Ignowski (Niles, Mich.-Niles) picked up the complete game effort and improves to 8-1 on the year. The righty hurler fanned six UDM batters and allowed just two hits in six innings of work.

In game two, EMU continued its offensive surge, tallying 15 en route to the 15-7 win. The 15-run outing marks the third most scored by an EMU squad in program history. The Green and White also connected on six extra-base hits for the second most by an EMU team, four of which were home runs.

Russ was responsible for two of the four round-trippers to put together two consecutive multi-home run performances. She went 5-for-5 with four RBI, scoring three times. Her five hits also ties the most ever recorded by an EMU softball player, which has not been achieved since the 1994 season.

Jessica Richards (Canton, Ohio-Jackson)
tallied three hits in game two, Lindsay Smith (Seville, Ohio-Cloverleaf) also had a multi-hit game.

Skodinski extended her hit-streak to seven with two hits in the contest, including a home run and two RBIs.

The Eagles quickly put runs on the board, scoring one in the first thanks to a Detroit error, and added another two in the second.

With a two run lead in the third, Russ hit her third home run of the day to push the Eagles ahead, 5-1.

Two scoreless innings ensued until Skodinski registered an RBI single to plate Smith, adding to EMU's already convincing lead.

EMU's offense explode in the final inning, unleashing eight runs on seven hits and two Detroit errors. Russ led the inning with a single up the middle. Back-to-back errors loaded the bases for Coquillard, who drove her first career grand slam to right center field, increasing the EMU lead to eight.

Later in the same frame, Skodinski hit a towering two-RBI home run to give the Eagles a 13-4 advantage. Gerber followed with a single up the middle only to be quickly knocked in by Russ' fourth bomb of the day.

Detroit threatened in the bottom of the seventh with four runs, but the Eagles managed to shut it down and take game two, 15-7

Lauren Wells (Lowell, Ind.-Lowell)
, this week's MAC West Pitcher of the Week, picked up the win in the circle to improve to 3-1 on the season, striking out three in 3.2 innings of work.

The Eagles return to action this Friday, April 1, as they open up Mid-American Conference play when they visit the Huskies of Northern Illinois for a doubleheader set in DeKalb, Ill. First pitch is slated for a 1 p.m. start.
