YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team was upended at home by the Cleveland State University Vikings, 2-1, in 10 innings amidst solid pitching performances by both sides in a non-conference affair at Oestrike Stadium, today, March 29.
A costly error in the top of the 10th inning allowed the Vikings to push across the go-ahead run which eventually won it for the visitors as Brandon Cooper struck out Brent Ohrman (Adrian, Mich.-Adrian) and Daniel Russell (Grandville, Mich.-Grandville) with the tying run at second base in the bottom of the 10th to close out the game.
Cleveland State starter Nate Blankemeyer tossed 8.1 innings, allowing just a run on six hits and settling for the no-decision. Cooper relieved the right-hander to record his first victory of the season after going 1.2 innings and allowing just a hit.
Meanwhile, EMU starting pitcher Jordan Glover (Toronto, Ont.-Ontario Schools) tied his career-high with six strikeouts as he allowed just a run on five hits in settling for the no-decision. Relievers Neil Butara (Euclid, Ohio-St. Ignatius) and Kyle Peterson (Chandler, Ariz.-Hamilton-Chandler-Gilbert C.C.) combined to throw four innings and allowed just four hits while striking out six batters.
Eastern Michigan scored the game's first run in the third inning after Ken Battiston (West Milton, Ohio-Milton Union) drove in Ben Magsig (Okemos, Mich.-Okemos-Lansing C.C.) with a sacrifice fly to center field. Magsig reached third after leading off the frame with a double and advancing on Aaron Chavez's (Milpitas, Calif.-Milpitas-Ohlone College) single to center.
The Eagles recorded just seven hits in the contest including three in the final five innings.
The Vikings tied the score in the fifth as Matt Kirkwood led off the inning with a double before the next batter, Alex Johnson, singled him home.
CSU benefitted from an Eagle defensive miscue in the 10th inning. Tom Carter led off the frame with a single up the middle and then stole second to get into scoring position. The pinch hitter Alex Gnezda then attempted a sacrifice bunt, but the slow rolling grounder forced Magsig to rush his throw and the inaccurate toss sailed over first baseman Kyle Klein's (Grand Rapids, Mich.-West Catholic) head allowing Carter to score the go-ahead run.
Battiston supplied a one out double in the 10th, but Cooper struck out Ohrman and Russell to close out the game.
The Eagles will be back in action tomorrow, March 30, to play host to Washtenaw County rival, the University of Michigan. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m. Live stats and an audio streaming broadcast will be provided. Fans can listen live through Eagle All-Access via EMUEagles.com.
