EMU takes doubles point but falls in all six singles matches
COLUMBUS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) - After winning two of the first three doubles matches en route to earning the contests first point, the Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team was unable to continue its run, falling in all six of the singles matches to the No. 75 Buckeyes of Ohio State University, 6-1, in a late Sunday evening battle.
The duo of Miriam Westerink and Nino Mebuke was able to win the No. 1 doubles draw over OSU's No. 1 doubles in a 9-7 decision, as Xu Chang and Georgia de'Lisle-Tarr followed suit to win an 8-4 match.
When it came to singles, Mebuke, in the No. 2 spot, and Xu, at No. 3, came closest to getting victories for the Green and White. Mebuke forced a three-set match, winning set two, 7-6, after narrowly losing set one by a score of 7-6. In the final set, Ohio State's Gabby Steele would close out the match 11-9.
Xu also lost her first set, 6-3, before taking set two by the score of 6-4. The final set was not as close as the first two, as Kara Cecil won the set 10-4.
"We got off to a good start tonight winning the doubles point," said EMU Head Coach Ryan Ray. "We looked sharp in that area. We gave Ohio State a good push tonight, but couldn't get the job finished in the end. It was disappointing to not pull out the No. 2 and No. 3 positions after winning the first sets, but our ladies gave a good effort and credit the Buckeyes for coming back. We will now fully focus on the conference season ahead."
EMU starts conference play March 25 as the team travels to Muncie, Ind. to face Ball State. The following day, March 26, Eastern will take on Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.
