Three women earn two wins on the day

MUNCIE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team opened the 2011 Mid-American Conference season with an impressive 6-1 road win over the Ball State Cardinals, Friday afternoon, March 25, in Muncie, Ind.

Eastern Michigan started the day off on the right foot, taking two of the three doubles matches to go ahead early, 1-0.

The Eagles' momentum spilled over into singles action as well. After Mariya Toncheva and Marcela Rivero teamed up to earn a doubles win, each also put together impressive runs to pick up solo wins as well. Rivero's win was in come-from-behind fashion as she lost the first set 2-6 before rallying to 6-1 wins in each of the final two sets.

Miriam Westerink had perhaps the most impressive win of the day, as she posted a 6-1, 6-2 victory in the No. 1 singles spot. Xu Chang, who was on the losing end of her doubles match, rebounded to earn a solo win, taking the second of her two-set win 7-6.

“I'm glad we picked up the win today,” said EMU head coach Ryan Ray. “We were a bit flat and lifeless at times, so that part needs to improve as we move forward. However, the Ball State girls fought hard, and to get a MAC season-opening match road win is satisfying.”

The Eagles hope that today's win will help boost them into tomorrow's contest with the back-to-back defending MAC Champion Miami RedHawks. That match is slated to begin 1 p.m.
