BLOOMINGTON, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — With a win over Wright State this afternoon, the Eastern Michigan University softball team improves to 8-2 on the season for the best start in program history, surpassing the 7-2 mark achieved during the 1982 campaign under then Head Coach Ann Johnson. The win also links together a seven-game win streak, the longest run for the Eagles since the 2007 season when they strung together eight straight games before eventually being crowned the Mid-American Conference Tournament Champions that year.
The Eagles downed the Raiders 9-2 in EMU's opening contest at Indiana University's Hoosier Classic in Bloomington, Ind., hammering out 13 hits in the contest with six EMU hitters having multi-hit performances at the plate.
Jenna Ignowski (Niles, Mich.-Niles) picks up the win after 4.1 innings in the circle and improves to 5-1 on the year. She fanned three of 19 batters faced, while holding the WSU offense to just two runs.
Jillian Williamson (Sebewaing, Mich.-Unionville-Sebewaing Area) posted a solid performance in relief though 2.2 innings of work. The righty hurler stymied the Raiders offense, keeping them scoreless to pick up her first save of the season.
Pacing the Eagles at the plate was Nellie Coquillard (Niles, Mich.-Niles). The sophomore was perfect at the dish for the Eagles, successfully converting on a 2-for-2 effort while knocking in a run and scoring twice. provided a huge offensive lift with a career-best five-RBI performance Lauren Delapaz (Plymouth, Mich.-Canton) on two hits this afternoon.
EMU was first to strike in the opening frame on a sacrifice fly off of the bat of Stacie Skodinski (South Bend, Ind.-Washington) to plate Jessica Richards (Canton, Ohio-Jackson) from third base. Sarah Gerber (North Canton, Ohio-Hoover) registered her first of two singles on the day in the following at bat, but the Raiders were able to close out the inning, keeping the EMU advantage to one run.
The Eagles strung together four hits in the third to tally three more runs on the board for a 4-0 advantage over the Raiders. Skodinski reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to third on a Gerber single through the left side. With runners at first and second, Coquillard drilled a single up the middle allowing Skodinski come around and score from second base. A Delapaz single knocked in two RBIs, completing the scoring rally for EMU.
Wright State did not take long to respond, notching two runs in the bottom of the fourth to cut their deficit to two, but the Green and White offense surged to five more runs and closed out the contest for a 9-2 victory.
EMU was originally slated for a 4 p.m. matchup against Loyola-Chicago this afternoon, but poor weather conditions have forced the game to be rescheduled for tomorrow, March 19. First pitch is scheduled for a 10 a.m start.
