Eagles down Red Flash, 2-0, 10-1, and improve to 5-2 overall

Box Scores: Game One. Game Two.

FORT MYERS, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University softball team outscored St. Francis (Pa.) 12-1 through two games in a doubleheader this afternoon, March 1, against the Red Flash in Fort Myers, Fla.

The Eagles improve to 5-2 on the year, while the Red Flash fall to 2-10 overall.

EMU took game one, 2-0. Sophomore pitcher Jenna Ignowski (Niles, Mich.) picked up the win and improves to 3-1 on the year. The reigning Mid-American Conference Pitcher of the Week (March 1) struck out six in 7.0 innings of work, holding the Red Flash to just three hits in the contest.

Offensively, the Eagles relied on clutch hitting, as they needed just four hits to pick up the win. Stacie Skodinski (South Bend, Ind.-Washington) led the Eagles with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate and took part in every aspect of the Green and White's scoring efforts. The senior shortstop knocked in the go-ahead run and later scored on a wild pitch in the 2-0 victory.

The Eagles waited until the sixth inning to strike, manufacturing their two runs in the top of the frame. Jessica Richards (Canton, Ohio-Jackson) led off with an infield single and was sacrificed to second on a textbook bunt off the bat of Katy Blaharski (Carleton, Mich.-Airport). With Richards standing at second, Skodinski stepped into the box and belted an RBI-double that ricocheted off of the outfield fence, pushing the Eagles ahead, 1-0. Back-to-back wild pitches commited by SFU''s Megan Layne allowed Skodinksi to score and swell the EMU lead to two.

The Red Flash kicked off the seventh inning with a single, and a wild pitch moved the SFU runner to second base. With one out, a controversial call ensued as first basemen Kayla Kostich (Taylor, Mich.-Cabrini) caught a fly ball in foul territory near the dugout entrance. The umpire ruled that Kostich stepped into the dugout and left the playing area. Althrough an out was issued by the umpire, a dead ball was ruled and the runner at second was awarded third base, putting the SFU offense in a prime position for a comeback. However, the Eagles were able to record the final out on a routine fly ball to centerfield.

In the nightcap, the Green and White downed SFU 10-1 in five innings of play.  Skodinski went 2-for-3 with an RBI, scoring three runs in another solid offensive outing, while Courtney Nicholson (Navarre, Ohio-Canton Central Catholic) chipped in with two hits including a triple and knocking in one run.

Jillian Williamson (Sebewaing, Mich.-Unionville-Sebewaing Area)
(1-1) earned her first win of the season in her two-hit complete game effort. The sophomore denied the Red Flash of any offensive production through four innings, not allowing a single hit. It was not until the bottom of the fifth that SFU would register tally anything in the hit column.

EMU put its first run on the board in the opening frame with an RBI-double from Sarah Gerber (North Canton, Ohio-Hoover), scoring Blaharksi from second base.

In the third inning, EMU increased its lead to six after stringing together four runs. Richards and Blaharski had back-to-back singles, and Skodinski knocked in a run with an RBI-single. With runners at second and third, Kostich laid down the squeeze bunt, but SFU pitcher Michelle Andrews made an errant throw to home, plating two more runs for the Eagles. Nicholson would later bring around Kostich with a single, moving the score to 6-0.

Another four-run rally in the fourth inreased the Green and White's lead to 10. The Red Flash scored their lone run in the bottom of the fifth off of an error by Skodinski, but the Eagles were able to close it out and secure the victory.

The Eagles will return to action tomorrow for a doubleheader slated against the Eagles of Florida Gulf Coast. First pitch is set for a 5 p.m. start.
