Rawls Wins 500m Run at Meyo, Scarber Breaks EMU Record

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – On the first day of the famed Meyo Invitational at the University of Notre Dame, the Eastern Michigan University men's and women's track team picked up key performances from some familiar faces en route to a win and five top-five finishes overall.
In a meet which features more than 1,700 athletes, sophomore sprinter Asia Rawls prevailed as the winner in the 500-meter run by crossing the finish line with a career-best time of 1:13.38, beating 42 other runners who participated in the race. It was the second time Rawls ran the event this season, winning the previous event at the EMU/Rocket Holiday Meet in December.
Angela Scarber also stepped up to the big stage, breaking a 10-year-old school record in the weight throw. The junior thrower hurled her weight 55-07.00 to best the previous school mark of 53-07.75 set by Becky Leevey in 2000. Scarber finished seventh in the event.
The Eagles top sprinters in the 60-meter dash from both the men's and women's side also put their best foot forward, each finishing third in the preliminary round of the event. Ashlee Abraham ran a final's qualifying time of 7.58, while senior speedster and co-captain Clint Allen posted a time of 6.79 to qualify for the finals on day two.
Sophomore distance runner Courtney Calka showed why she is one of the best runners in the nation, finishing fourth among more than 50 racers, and posted a career-best mark of 16:48.99 in the event.
The men's 4,000-meter distance medley relay quartet of Matt Hammersmith, Kyle Fortin Joshua George and Matthew Wines picked up a fifth-place finish for the Green and White in their event.
Other top finishers included Tiffani Long's eighth-place long jump and Max Babit's eighth-place pole vault mark.
Day two of the Meyo Invite will begin Saturday, Feb. 5, at 10 a.m. with competition set to conclude after 5 p.m. EST.
