Eastern Michigan Tennis extends opponents scorless streak to three games
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The women's tennis team at Eastern Michigan University continued its non-conference dominance Friday, Feb. 4, as the team blanked its third straight opponent, 7-0, this time sending the visiting Wright State Raiders back home to Dayton, Ohio with a loss.
The Eagles were able to capture the doubles point by winning all three contests with Miriam Westerink and Nino Mebuke taking the No. 1 8-0 and Xu Chang and Georgia de'Lisle-Tarr winning No. 3 doubles 8-1. The freshman-sophomore combo of Mariya Toncheva and Celine Donnet beat out WSU's Amy Nini and Taylor Hines for an 8-4 win at the No. 2 spot.
In singles play, Toncheva was the only Eagle forced into a third set, but she managed to pull out the tough win, 5-7, 7-6 (6), 10-2. In the midst of all of EMU's victories, Xu was able to close her opponent out the quickest at the No. 3 singles spot, as she claimed a 6-1, 6-1 win over Nini.
“I'm pleased with the effort and focus today” said EMU Head Coach Ryan Ray. “Our energy and footwork in doubles was much better at the start compared to last Saturday. Mariya had a pesky opponent, but I was proud of the way she finished the match tiebreaker with confidence. We are going to need a strong effort Sunday in what should be a competitive match against a good MSU team.”
The Green and White will be back on the court Sunday afternoon as the Eagles put the three game win streak on the line against the Green and White of Michigan State University in East Lansing, Mich.
