Eagles' three-match win streak snapped
EAST LANSING, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team was unable to sustain its win streak, falling to the Spartans of Michigan State University, Sunday, Feb. 6, in East Lansing, Mich.
The Eagles (4-4), who had won three matches in a row (all 7-0 shutouts), fell for the first time in nearly three weeks against the now-4-1 Spartans.
Miriam Westerink and Nino Mebuke gave undefeated singles pair Amy Barton Marina Bohrer all they could handle in what was arguably the closest match of the day, as the Eagles lost by the narrow margin of 8-7 (5).
Mebuke also played the Eagles closest singles match of the day, as the freshman forced MSU's Valentina Rusakova to a third set, losing 6-3, 4-6, 10-8.
"This was a very disappointing result," said EMU head coach Ryan Ray. "We put forth a poor performance in singles today. We made way too many unforced errors early in the points, and MSU's players were sharp today. This is a big step back for us so we need to get back to work this week."
Eastern Michigan will be back on the courts on Feb. 11-13 in Nebraska as the team takes on Creighton, Nebraska and Northern Iowa for the weekend.
