- The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team opens Mid-American Conference action with the Huskies of Northern Illinois University this Friday, Feb. 4, at 7 p.m. at the Convocation Center in DeKalb, Ill. It will mark the first of five consecutive conference duals that will close out the regular season for the Eagles.

--

A LOOK AHEAD: The Eagles are done with the non-conference portion of its schedule and ready to take on the ever-competitive Mid-American Conference by kicking off the MAC slate with a road meeting at Northern Illinois University, Friday, Feb. 4.

LAST TIME OUT: EMU hosted the 2011 Eastern Duals last Saturday, Jan. 29, defeating Oakland, SIU-Edwardsville and Tiffin at Bowen Field House. The Eagles cruised to convincing wins over each of their opponents, beating them by a combined score of 127-15 including a 48-0 shutout over Oakland.
Junior Filiberto Colon was one of two Eagles to win three bouts on the day with freshman Jared Germaine also taking three (2 by forfeit). Each of Colon's victories were bonus point wins, the first a major decision followed by two pins that totaled just 52 seconds combined.
Other notable wrestler who had solid days were junior Lester France, who won two matches by tech. fall, Seth Schaner, who tallied two bonus point victories, and J.T. Rice, who won each of his two matches. Freshman Khodor Hoballah also recorded two pins for the Eagles.

ON THE ROAD AGAIN: Eastern Michigan hits the road once again after a rare meet at home last Saturday, Jan. 29, which it took all three matches. Now begins the most difficult stretch of the year for EMU as they close out the regular season with five straight Mid-American Conference bouts with four of those taking place on the road, beginning with Northern Illinois this Friday, Feb. 4.
“NIU is always tough, even their less talented wrestlers come to fist fight,” Head Coach Derek DelPorto said. “It will be a fun dual, and as always, we'll have to win the close matches.
“We have wrestled a few of their guys earlier this season, so there will be a few re-matches on Friday.”
A pair of re-matches to keep an eye on will be EMU's Filiberto Colon and NIU's Izzy Montemayor, as well as, EMU's Nick Hendrick and NIU's Matt Mougin. Both meetings took place at the MSU Open earlier in the season. Colon got the best of his NIU counterpart in a 1:19 pin while Hendrick recorded a, 5-0, shutout decision over Mougin.

ROAD TO GLORY: EMU wrestlers might want to familiarize themselves with NIU more than any other school they'll be traveling to this season as the 2011 Mid-American Conference Championships will be taking place in DeKalb, Ill. come March. The Eagles are in great shape heading into the final stretch as they will try to improve on their fifth place finish from a year ago.
“We are as healthy as any team in the country,” DelPorto said. “Unfortunately, there aren't many teams that are 100 percent healthy due to the nature of our sport and especially the final grind of the season.”

NO MORE WADE-ING: Senior heavyweight David Wade is finally getting the recognition he deserves as he ranks 18th-nationally in this week's Intermat rankings. Wade comes off a stellar 2009-10 campaign in which he qualified Nationals after finishing second at the 2010 MAC Championships.
“It's a confidence boost for anyone who gets the recognition they deserve,” DelPorto said. “I'm happy for him and I hope he continues his success and ends his career on the podium in Philly!”
He has won seven consecutive matches and nine of his last 10 overall. He sits at 13-6 on the season, 7-1 in dual matches, and has recorded four pins so far on the campaign. If he keeps it up, he should make a return to Nationals, held in Philadelphia this year.

COLON GETS FIRST MAC HONOR: Junior Filiberto Colon recorded three bonus point victories over the weekend, tallying two wins by fall and another by major decision at the 2011 Eastern Duals.
Colon came away with a 12-3 major decision win over Matt Raysin of Oakland en route to Eastern Michigan's 48-0 shutout win over the Golden Grizzlies. His second and third bouts, each resulting in pins, came in a combined time of 52 seconds with his fastest being in 25 seconds.
Eastern Michigan claimed a 40-9 dual win over SIU-Edwardsville before overcoming Tiffin by a score of 39-6. Colon leads the Eagles with 17 wins and 13 pins on the season.
