SEDONA, Ariz. (EMUEagles.com) – Redshirt freshman Alyssa Kwon (Richmond Hills, Ontario-Richmond Hills) fired an opening round 76 to lead the Eastern Michigan University women's golf team Friday afternoon, Feb. 25, at the Red Rocks Invitational. Kwon sits in a fourth place tie, while the Eagles are sixth as a team with a 322 on the par-72, 6,084-yard Oakcreek Country Club course.
Behind Kwon, senior Robyn Scott (Auckland, New Zealand-Westlake Girls-Texas Tech Univ.) recorded an opening round 80 to sit in an eight-way tie for 19th place. Senior Darby Peters (Lake Orion, Mich.-Lake Orion) is tied for 35th with an 82, while sophomore Sarah Johnson (Wixom, Mich.-Walled Lake Central) and freshman Usanee Laopattananont (Bangplee, Thailand-Thai Christian School) are tied for 48th place with an 84.
Competing as individuals, sophomore Meredith Fairbairn (Orangeville, Ontario-Westside Secondary School) and Corey Crossan (London, Ontario-Mother Teresa Catholic Secondary School) shot an 86 and a 90, respectively.
Northern Arizona University shot a 304 in the first round and holds a nine shot lead over Western Michigan University with a 295. Montana is third with a 315 followed by Nevada (319) and Grand Canyon (321). The Lumberjacks' Dakin Whitmer holds down the top on the leader board with a one-over 73.
Round two of the Red Rocks Invitational will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 26.
