– Coming off a series in which they took one-of-three against fourth-ranked Clemson, the Eastern Michigan University baseball team is back at it this week as they travel to Lexington, Ky. to take on the Kentucky Wildcats in a single game affair, Wednesday, Feb. 23.

Eagle Recap
After dropping the opening game of the series to Clemson, the Eagles responded with a 7-6 victory Saturday afternoon. EMU built up a 6-0 lead behind the left arm of starter Robert Wendzicki, who threw 4.2 innings and allowed just two runs on four hits, holding the Tigers scoreless through the first four innings.

Sophomore Daniel Russell turned in his best performance at the plate in an Eagle uniform, going 4-for-4 with two doubles and scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch in the eighth inning. Right-hander Corey Chaffins shut the door with 3.1 innings in relief to pick up his first win of the season.

In the series finale, the Eagles (1-2) received five strong innings from right-hander Steve Weber. The sophomore allowed four runs on six hits, but kept the Green and White in the game against a potent Tigers lineup. Clemson starter, Kevin Brady, baffled the EMU lineup with 5.1 innings and 10 strikeouts while allowing a run on two hits in leading his team to a 5-1 win.

EMU hit just .228 for the series with three of their four extra-base hits coming from Russell, who hit .455 (5-for-11) in the three games. Senior Zack Leonard leads the team with a .462 (6-for-13) batting average with a home run and two RBI.

The pitching staff struggled with its location against Clemson, giving up 33 hits and walking 25 batters in the series.

Scouting the Wildcats
Kentucky (0-3), of the Southeastern Conference, is coming off a weekend tournament at College of Charleston where it dropped each of its three contests against CoC, Marshall and Miami (Ohio). The 'Cats received their best outing on the mound from Alex Meyere, who recorded the longest outing of his career, going seven innings and allowing only a run on three hits while striking out 13 against the RedHawks.

Kentucky hit just .181 as a team, but catcher Luke Maile let them at the dish with a .364-clip (4-for-11) with a double and two RBI. Braden Kapteyn followed with a .250 batting average and four runs scored.

The Wildcats take on Moorhead State on the road today, but hosting EMU in their home opener Wednesday.
