ANN ARBOR, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – It was a record-setting day for Jessica Hemingway, as the senior pole vaulter set an Eastern Michigan University women's track and field record, as well as a University of Michigan indoor track facility record, by clearing a height of 13-07.25 in the pole vault, Saturday, Feb. 19, at the Silverston Invitational in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Hemingway was able to break a six-year-old facility record which was set by Mickie Rzepka of Michigan State when she jumped 13-01.50, and a nine-year-old school record set by Hana Palamaa in 2002 when she hit a mark of 13-05.75. The new record is the highest mark cleared by an EMU pole vaulter (indoor or outdoor season) and is nearly four inches better than Hemingway's previous career-best of 13-03.50. Only 11 higher marks have been cleared this year nationally in the pole vault, and Hemingway's mark stands as the 18th-best in the nation.
Also in the field, Tiffani Long had a stellar performance in the long jump as she posted an 18-10.75 mark in the event, good for the number one finish, while Kate Wolanin was second in the high jump. Shnell Wishart also snagged a second-place finish in the triple jump after clearing 39-06.00.
The runners also fared well, placing seven top-three finishes. Naomi Andre and Rosie White finished one and three in the 200-meter run as Andre crossed the line in 24.40 for the win and a new top-time for the conference this year. Ashley Wartley and Morgan Churchwell posted third-place finishes in the 60-meter hurdles and the mile run, respectively, and in the 400-meter run, the Eagles placed the top two runners, with Asia Rawls winning and Dejaa Shearer finishing just behind her for second-place. Beverly Elcock also finished fourth in that race.
The Eagles were able to use the Silverston Invite as a tune-up for the upcoming, Feb. 25-26, Mid-American Conference Championships in Bowling Green, Ohio. EMU is primed to have its best finish at MAC under head coach Sue Parks.
