Diving Coach Buck Smith Honored With Bruce Harlan Award

Award honors continued leadership, contributions, and dedicated service to Michigan High School Diving
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Eastern Michigan University men's and women's diving coach, Buck Smith, has been selected as the recipient of the Bruce Harlan Award for 2010. The honor is the highest award given by the Michigan Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association (MISCA) for continued leadership, contributions, and dedicated service to Michigan High School Diving.
To be considered for this award, a person must have coached interscholastic diving for at least five years in Michigan with above average success, and have demonstrated leadership at the Local, State, and National levels. The dedication and hard work put forth by Coach Smith has been an inspiration to fellow colleagues within diving and MISCA.
Smith, in his 11th season as the head diving coach for both the men's and women's teams at EMU, was named the Mid-American Conference Diving Coach of the Year in 2010 after three of his divers finished in the top-five in the one meter, including Danielle Hulvey, who captured a second place medal and was selected to the All-MAC second-team.
During his time at Eastern Michigan, Smith's divers have placed in the top eight at the Mid-American Conference Championships 81 times. EMU divers have won nine MAC Championship titles, set 3 MAC records, 3 school records and a pool record that has stood for 18 years. Smith has had a diver named MAC Diver of the Year four times and as recent as 2007. He has also been named MAC Coach of the Year six times.
Smith will be honored at the annual MISCA instructional clinic and awards luncheon on Friday, Sept. 16, at the McCamly Plaza Hotel in Battle Creek, Michigan. For more information regarding the clinic, visit the MISCA website at www.miscaonline.net.
