YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)—The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team jumped out to an early 9-0 lead and never looked back in a 22-14 victory over Ohio University Sunday afternoon, Dec. 4, inside Bowen Field House. The Eagles were victorious in six individual bouts while recording their first triumph over a Mid-American Conference opponent since Feb. 6, 2009.
The Eagles (5-1; 1-0 MAC) were once again jump-started by redshirt sophomore Jared Germaine and redshirt senior Andrew Novak, who started the match off with a decision and pin at 125 lbs. and 133 lbs., respectively.
After redshirt senior Lester France won the 165 lbs. match, the Green and White led by as much 15 points, 18-3, before Ohio took a pair of major decisions to make it an 18-11 contest with two bouts remaining. Redshirt sophomore Nick Whitenburg clinched the dual for EMU with a major decision of his own at 197 lbs.
The Bobcats (0-2; 0-2 MAC) dropped their second MAC dual in as many days.
Germaine won the opening match over Gabe Ramos, 8-5, on the strength of two takedowns, a reversal, an escape and one point for riding time. After falling behind, 6-5, Germaine notched the winning takedown at the 1:14 mark of the middle period and held Ramos at bay for the rest of the match.
The redshirt sophomore is now a perfect 6-0 in regular season tussles and 10-1 overall.
At 133 lbs., Novak and Jake Wojcik fought to a scoreless first period. In the middle frame, Novak took charge with a takedown which would ultimately result in Wojcik being pinned to the mat at the 4:14 mark. The New Boston, Mich. native gave the Eagles a 9-0 lead after two matches.
Darrin Boing then gave the Bobcats their first points of the match against redshirt senior Corey Phillips at 141 lbs with a 12-7 decision. Despite losing the bout, Phillips mounted a late rally to prevent a major decision for Boing.
Redshirt freshman Jaylyn Bohl dominated early on in the 149 lbs. match against Brad Squire with six points—three by way of near-fall—and 2:04 of riding time for a 6-0 lead after one period. Squire fought back to cut Bohl's advantage to 6-4 with two minutes remaining, but Bohl regained his form in the final period and held Squire off the scoreboard for a 7-4 win. EMU led the match, 12-3.
At 157 lbs. redshirt junior Aaron Sulzer used a takedown and a reversal for a 4-2 lead after five minutes against Harrison Hightower. Sulzer recorded a second takedown in the final period plus a point for riding time to win the match, 7-4, and grow the EMU lead to 15-3.
The 165 lbs. match between France and Miles Chapman was 3-1 in favor of France headed into the third period, where the Flat Rock, Mich. native fought his way to a decisive takedown with 30 seconds left to win by decision, 5-3. The Green and White now held a commanding 18-3 lead.
Then at 174 lbs. redshirt sophomore Phillip Joseph put his perfect regular season record on the line against No. 15-ranked Nick Purdue. Joseph trailed, 5-1, after two periods of fast-paced action. Purdue outlasted Joseph through the final two minutes and finished with a 10-1 major decision to cut the EMU lead to 18-7.
Ohio won its second straight match at 184 lbs. as Ryan Garringer outmatched redshirt freshman Mike Curby by a 10-2 score. The major decision slashed the EMU lead further to seven points, 18-11, with a pair of matches remaining.
Whitenburg took to the mat to try and stop the bleeding against Beau Wenger at 197 lbs. The match was largely fought from the neutral position until the closing seconds of the middle period, when Whitenburg gained a 5-1 lead with a takedown.
The third period was completely controlled by Whitenburg, who clinched the match with three riding time points for a 9-1 major decision. The victory also sealed the match for EMU, which held a 22-11 lead with one match to go.
In the final match of the day, No. 12 Jeremy Johnson defeated redshirt senior Wes Schroeder, 6-2, to make the final score 22-14 for the Eagles.
The Eagles will return to action following the Christmas holiday, Dec. 29-30, at the Midlands Championships in Evanston, Ill.
