Three Eagles Still in Contention at Midlands Championships

Germaine, Sulzer and Joseph post 2-1 records on Day One

EVANSTON, Ill. (EMUEagles.com)— The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team completed day one of the 49th Annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships Thursday, Dec. 29, with a trio of Eagles still fighting through their respective tournament brackets. The Eagles currently sit in 20th place out of 43 teams with 21 points.
Eleven Eagles competed in the annual event, with redshirt sophomores Jared Germaine (125 lbs.) and Phillip Joseph (174 lbs.), and redshirt junior Aaron Sulzer (157 lbs.) stamping their ticket to day two by posting 2-1 records.
Germaine, the No. 7-ranked wrestler at 125 lbs. opened the day with a pair of victories by decision before dropping the third round match to No. 2 Matt McDonough of national powerhouse University of Iowa. The Saginaw, Mich. native won his second match over No. 9 Garrett Frey of Princeton University, 9-6.
Awaiting Germaine to begin day two will be No. 11 Nathan Fitzenreider of North Central College.
Joseph stormed through his first pair of matches as the No. 8-ranked wrestler at 174 lbs., claiming an 11-2 major decision over Drake Stein of Purdue University his opening bout. After falling into the wrestleback bracket, Joseph rallied with decisions over Ian Korb of the University of Pennsylvania and Dan Selter of the University of Illinois to stay in contention.
The Lapper, Mich. native will continue his quest for third place tomorrow against familiar foe No. 7 John-Martin Cannon from the University at Buffalo.
At 157 lbs., No. 8 Sulzer made quick work of his first two opponents, winning by a combined score of 25-0 with a technical fall and a major decision.
In the third round, Sulzer ran into Northwestern University's Jason Welch, who handed the EMU co-captain a 13-4 defeat. Welch is the No. 1-ranked wrestler in the 157 lbs. weight class and is currently ranked No. 3 in the nation.
Sulzer will open Friday's competition wrestling Purdue's Tommy Churchard, who is on a three-match winning streak since losing his opening round match.
Thursday's action ended with redshirt seniors Andrew Novak (133 lbs.) and Corey Phillips (141 lbs.) along with redshirt freshman Mike Curby (184 lbs.) recording two wins apiece before being eliminated from the competition.
Iowa currently leads all teams with 79.5 points and five grapplers still contending for individual titles.
Day two of the tournament begins tomorrow, Dec. 30, at noon with semifinal, consolation and seventh-place matches. The event concludes with first, third and fifth place bouts beginning at 7:20 p.m., with the award ceremony concluding at 9:30 p.m.
