Men in First, Women in Second After Day One Action

Men's swimming and diving tally 333 points through 14 events in first place; women post 319 in second place

— After day one of the Eastern Michigan University Invitational, the men's swimming and diving team is currently sitting in first place with 333 points through 14 events, while the women's squad remains in second place with 319 points.

On the men's side, Oakland is in second place with 277 points after today's session, while Wayne State and Ashland are sitting in third (226) and fourth (167), respectively. In fifth place, Ball State earned 118 points, and IUPUI tallied 53 points for the sixth spot. Rounding out the field this afternoon is Findlay with 43 points.

Oakland leads the women's side with 358 points while the Eagles sit in a close second after today's events. Wayne State is in third with 220.5 points and Ashland sits in fourth with 153.5 points. IUPUI's 82 points this afternoon is good for fifth place, while Findlay closes out day one in sixth place with 37 points.

For the men, Jeffrey Craig was the lone Eagle to record a first place finish in today's action, leading the Eagles' 1-2-3-4 sweep in the one meter event with 341.10 points. Kevin Douglas was runner-up in the event with 320.40 points, while Andrew Saunders and Tyler Keelean earned scores of 314.92 and 302.85, respectively.

Jacob Hanson was the top performer for the Eagles in the 200 Backstroke. The junior touched the wall at 1:46.23 for a second place finish. Tyler Capen placed 13th in the event (1:54.71), while Justin Duong finished in 14th (1:55.98).

EMU placed four in the top-10 in the 100 Freestyle. Brian Moore led the way with his fourth place, 46.20 performance. Matt Zavislak completed the distance in 46.72 for a sixth place finish, while Dexter Foos and Gus Everson sprinted to eighth place (47.01) and 10th place (47.06) finishes, respectively.

In the 200 Breastroke, Troy Esentan and Michael Swain would go 3-4 with times of 2:03.11 and 2:03.74, while Jake Heyblom and Mike Fisher earned sixth and seventh place finishes in the event after touching the wall at 2:06.39 and 2:07.12.

Franco Petrone was the fastest Eagle in the pool for the 1,650 Freestyle, racing to a 15:58.37 finish, good for second place. Ricky Linder placed fifth with a time of 16:20.92, while Gilles Renard took sixth in 16:32.65.

Aaron Lawson touched the wall in sixth place with a time of 1:53.54 in the 200 Butterfly. Teammates Michael Kinross and Tom Coates placed ninth and tenth, respectively.

The women's swimming and diving team had two first-place finishes on the day, highlighted by Briana Emig's pool and meet record time of 16:03.51 in the 1,650 Freestyle. The time is not only a career-best for the junior, but it is currently the second fastest time in NCAA Division I for the 2011-12 season.

Kelly Hendricks notched the other Eagle victory. She was the top finisher on the three meter boards with a score of 314.93. Danielle Hulvey placed second with 297.90 points, and Soquel Rey tallied 280.43 in third place.
In the 200 Backstroke, Helena Tolic paced the Green and White with a 2:02.23, third place finish. Michelle Gingher took seventh in the event in 2:06.31, while Amanda Kiefer placed ninth in 2:06.76.

Sara Ghaffari led EMU with her third place, 51.61 time in the 100 Freestyle. Teammate Pauline Vigneron completed the distance in 54.04 for an 11th place effort, and Samantha Nameth sprinted to a 14th place finish with a time of 54.51.

Monica Dorszewski was runner-up in the 200 Breaststroke, clinching a time of 2:20.25 in the event. Lauren Kalinosky took fifth at 2:22.64, and Vanessa Weidner raced to a 2:24.80 finish for seventh place.

In the 200 Butterfly, Jaquelyn Swartz placed second after completing the distance in 2:02.05. Jessie Godlewski followed with a third place, 2:02.64 performance and teammates Meghan Richardson and Paige Copeland took eighth and ninth place, respectively.

The Eagles will finish up action at the EMU Invite tomorrow, Dec. 3 at Jones Natatorium. The first session is slated for 10 a.m. and the second session will start at 6 p.m. Live results will be available at EMUEagles.com.
