YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) —
The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team proved itself ready to start the 2011-12 season today, Nov. 5, cruising to a 99-42 win over a visiting Madonna University team here in the Convocation Center in the final exhibition game of the year.

Head Coach AnnMarie Gilbert's Eagles was able to call on 13 players during the game with 10 breaking into the scoring column.

Senior guard Tavelyn James (Detroit, Mich.-Mumford), fresh off her standout effort for the United States in the recent Pan American Games, led the Eagles with 32 points while sophomore Olivia Fouty (Toledo, Ohio-Sylvania Northview) scored 16 points with eight rebounds, and India Hairston (Flint, Mich.-Hamady) tallied 11 points with 12 rebounds.

Madonna was led by Heather Pratt with nine points.

EMU shot 43.2 percent from the field on 38-of-88 attempts while Madonna made just 25 percent of its shots, connecting on 12-of-48.  The Eagles out-rebounded the visitors, 62-30, and also made 10-of-24 threes for 41.7 percent.

The Eagles jumped out to a quick 17-3 lead in the game's first six minutes before Madonna was able to cut it back to 10, 19-9, with 13:36 left on two consecutive three-point field goals.

Eastern would increase its lead back to 15, 26-11, on a jumper by Redditt before the visitors would connect on two more triples to pull within nine, 26-17, with 8:58 left in the half.

The EMU offense then turned things up a notch, out-scoring the visitors, 20-3, over the final 8:30 of the half for a 46-20 halftime lead.

James led the first-half scoring with 15 while Fouty added 11 points and seven rebounds for the Eagles.  Madonna was paced by the tandem of Pratt and Herring with six each.

The Eagles exploded out of the gate in the second half, running off 33 points while holding the Crusaders to just two over the first seven minutes of the half.

After building that 75-22 lead, Gilbert was able to substitute freely, giving her bench plenty of opportunity to record some major playing time on the way to the 57-point victory.

EMU is scheduled to open the regular season on the road, Nov. 11, at Northeastern University in Boston, Mass.  The first home game is scheduled for Monday, Nov. 14, when the Eagles are slated to host Marygrove College in a 7 p.m. game here in the Convocation Center.
