YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)– The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team hits the road for a trio of duals at the Northeast Regional Saturday, Nov. 26, in Troy, N.Y. The Eagles will match up against Sacred Heart College, Binghamton University and Bucknell University. Binghamtom enters the weekend just outside of the Top-25, ranked No. 28 nationally.
The Eagles are off to a 1-0 start after defeating Michigan State University in the season-opener Friday, Nov. 18, in East Lansing, 20-16.
“We aren't going to hang our hats on the win,” said Head Coach Derek DelPorto, “but we are definitely excited about the results. It will certainly help boost the team's confidence going into the weekend.”
SPARTY DOWN: It was an opening night nearly 24 years in the making as EMU defeated Michigan State for the first time since the 1987-88 season, 20-16, Friday evening, Nov. 18. Eastern Michigan won for just the second time in 16 tries against the Spartans dating back to the 1976-77 season. The last time an EMU team toppled its Big Ten Conference adversary was Jan. 21, 1988, when it recorded a 23-19 victory.
Redshirt sophomore Jared Germaine ignited the Eagles–who won 5-of-10 matches on the evening–early on with a pin over Eric Olanowski at 6:35 of the 125 lbs. match.
The Eagles led by as much as 14-0 after redshirt senior Andrew Novak won a convincing 13-2 major decision over Brandon Fifield at 133 lbs. and redshirt senior Corey Phillips did the same to Brian Gibbs at 141 lbs. by a 10-2 score.
Redshirt junior Aaron Sulzer responded in the following match with arguably the knock-out blow of the evening, sending No. 15-ranked David Cheza back to the MSU bench with a 3-2 loss to push the EMU lead to 17-4.
Redshirt sophomore Justin Joseph made the most of his first dual in nearly two years with a hard-fought 2-1 decision over Curran Jacobs at 174 lbs. The win gave EMU a 20-7 lead with three matches remaining.
SULZER SUPREMACY: Michigan State's David Cheza was likely just the first of many victims for Aaron Sulzer (4-1) in the 2011-12 season. Sulzer toppled the No. 15-ranked Cheza by a 3-2 decision in Friday's win.
“Aaron wrestled a great match against a really tough kid,” remarked Head Coach Derek DelPorto.
Sulzer is no stranger to notching big wins in pressure situations, having defeated No. 11-ranked Matt Cathell from Kent State University at last year's Mid-American Conference Championships en route to a third place finish.
This weekend at the Northeast Regional, Sulzer will face another tough challenge when he squares off against No. 6-ranked Justin Lister of Binghamton.
CATALYST: Redshirt sophomore Jared Germaine's pin in the opening bout Friday against MSU was just what the Eagles needed to bolster their confidence for the remainder of the match.
“Jared is an awesome wrestler and his intensity and competitive drive is certainly contagious,” said Head Coach Derek DelPorto. “I think his pin definitely helped the team get hyped up!”
The victory carried special meaning for the Saginaw, Mich. native, who lost a tough 5-4 decision to Olanowski last season when the Spartans edged out the Eagles, 19-15, Jan. 8, inside Bowen Field House.
WIth the win, Germaine improved his record to 5-1 this season.
PHILLIP'S BACK: After missing all of last season with an injury, redshirt sophomore Phillip Joseph appears to be back in prime condition for the 2011-12 campaign. After posting a combined 3-2 record at the EMU Open and the MSU Open, Joseph showed his trademark resilience in a 2-1 win over Michigan State's Curran Jacobs Friday night.
“It is good to have Phillip back,” said coach DelPorto. “He is very fun to watch. He never stops moving and wears his opponents down to the point where they almost fall over.”
Joseph's presence in the lineup is critical to Eastern Michigan's dual success this season as he will likely be one of only a few options at the 174 lbs. weight class.
FIRST TRY: Friday's dual at MSU marked the first regular season dual for redshirt freshmen Jaylyn Bohl (149 lbs.) and Mike Curby (184 lbs.). Both grapplers recorded losses on the evening, but Bohl held his own against No. 20-ranked Dan Osterman and Curby stood tough against Ian Hinton.
In all, the Eagles carry seven newcomers on their roster for the 2011-12 season.
THE VOTES ARE IN: As is the custom in most locker rooms across the country, the EMU wrestling squad selected team captains for the 2011-12 season. This year, redshirt senior Corey Phillips, redshirt junior Aaron Sulzer and redshirt sophomore Jared Germaine were nominated for a second straight season while redshirt seniors Wes Schroeder and Lester France were chosen as captains for the first time.
2011-12 HOME SCHEDULE: If you missed all the excitement of the EMU Open, you are in luck! The Eagles will host a total of five more events at Bowen Field House this season including four Mid-American Conference duals.
EMU continues its home slate, Dec. 4, with a 2 p.m. matchup against Ohio. Central Michigan then invades Bowen, Jan. 15, as the Eagles try to take down the defending MAC champions. Action is set to begin at 7 p.m.
Two days later, Jan. 15, the Eagles will host Clarion, Indiana Tech and Indianapolis in the EMU Duals beginning at 11 a.m. Rounding out the schedule will be Northern Illinois University, Jan. 22, and the University at Buffalo, Feb. 8.
