YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)–
The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team gears up for its first dual event of the season Friday evening, Nov. 18, against Big Ten Conference foe Michigan State University at 7:30 p.m. The Eagles will head to East Lansing looking for revenge against the Spartans, who edged out a four-point victory last season, 19-15, at the MSU Duals, Jan. 8.

THE REAL FUN BEGINS: “The MSU dual is a very important dual to establish in-state respect,” said Head Coach Derek DelPorto, “but it certainly isn't our season apex. It is always a fun dual full of physical matches that are usually determined by only a few points.  We are definitely looking forward to the fight!”

OLD HAT: EMU and MSU have been mainstays on each other's schedules since the 2007-08 season. The Eagles have yet to notch a win against their in-state rival over four meetings, but have come close on several occasions. On Dec. 5, 2008, EMU came within three points, 18-15, of pulling even with the Spartans. Last season, MSU outlasted the Eagles, 19-15, Jan. 8.

Several EMU grapplers enjoyed success in last year's match with Michigan State including Filiberto Colon, who pinned Chris Lyon at the 1:20 mark of the 133 lbs. bout. Mike LeHolm, Aaron Sulzer and David Wade also recorded decisions in their respective weight classes.

SCOUTING SPARTY: Michigan State will provide the Eagles with a high-quality test of skill and endurance to begin the season. The Spartans return four national qualifiers from a year ago including No. 20-ranked Dan Osterman at 149 lbs., Curran Jacobs at 174 lbs., No. 16-ranked Tyler Dickenson at 197 lbs. and hevyweight Joe Rizqallah.

The Eagles will counter with a group of wrestlers hungry for in-state respect. Jaylyn Bohl wrestle at 149 lbs. first dual match after redshirting last season. Phillip Joseph gets the nod at 197 lbs. in his first action since 2010 after sitting out all of last year with an injury.
Either Nick Whitenburg or true freshman Anthony Abro will be responsible for the 197 lbs. bout, and Wes Schroeder will battle in the heavyweight match.

RECENTLY: Since the 2005-06 season, the Eagles have amassed an 8-7 record in opening day matches. That mark includes last season's opening day which saw the Green and White go 2-1 with wins over Harvard University and Sacred Heart University at the “Sprawl and Brawl” in Birmingham, N.Y.

Friday's tussle with MSU marks the first time since the 2007-08 season that Eastern Michigan has opened the dual portion of the schedule with just one opponent.

MELICK AND PIZZUTO TOUGH AT MSU OPEN: EMU competed in its first road event of the season Saturday, Nov. 12, at the Michigan State Open inside Jenison Field House. Nineteen Eagles competed in the annual event, with freshmen Justin Melick placing third at 149 lbs. and Vincent Pizzuto taking fifth place at 125 lbs. of the freshman and sophomore division.

The MSU Open marked the first collegiate wrestling event for Melick, who wasted no time making his presence felt with three straight victories. A fourth-round setback relegated Melick to the consolation bracket, but he received a bye to the third-place bout due to his early round success.

Melick was scheduled to wrestle Tyler Argue of Northern Illinois for third place, but was declared the winner of the match due to an injury. He ended the day with a 4-1 record including a pin and two decisions.

Pizzuto continued his march through open competition Saturday after turning in a nearly spotless 6-1 record to run his season mark to a team-best 11-1. After struggling in the opening-round match, Pizzuto battled through the consolation bracket with five consecutive wins to land a spot in the fifth place match.

In the bout for fifth place, Pizzuto outlasted Indiana Tech's Andre Sanders, 8-5. Overall, Pizzuto recorded five decisions and one pin.

THE VOTES ARE IN: As is the custom in most locker rooms across the country, the EMU wrestling squad selected team captains for the 2011-12 season. This year, redshirt senior Corey Phillips, redshirt junior Aaron Sulzer and redshirt sophomore Jared Germaine were nominated for a second straight season while redshirt seniors Wes Schroeder and Lester France were chosen as captains for the first time.

FOUR EAGLES RANKED IN MAC PRESEASON POLL: Head Coach Derek DelPorto's squad features four preseason-ranked grapplers. Redshirt senior Andrew Novak was tabbed second at 133 lbs. At 157 lbs., redshirt senior Aaron Sulzer was ranked tied for second with Donnie Corby of CMU. Redshirt junior Chris Eggert received a nod for second place at 165 lbs. and redshirt sophomore Nick Whitenburg was tied for second with Chad Friend of CMU at 197 lbs.

2011-12 HOME SCHEDULE: If you missed all the excitement of the EMU Open, you are in luck! The Eagles will host a total of five more events at Bowen Field House this season including four Mid-American Conference duals.

EMU continues its home slate, Dec. 4, with a 2 p.m. matchup against Ohio. Central Michigan then invades Bowen, Jan. 15, as the Eagles try to take down the defending MAC champions. Action is set to begin at 7 p.m.

Two days later, Jan. 15, the Eagles will host Clarion, Indiana Tech and Indianapolis in the EMU Duals beginning at 11 a.m. Rounding out the schedule will be Northern Illinois University, Jan. 22, and the University at Buffalo, Feb. 8.
