TOLEDO, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) –– The Eastern Michigan University football team returns to the road Saturday, Oct. 8, with its shortest Mid-American Conference road trip of the season to face off against the University of Toledo. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the Glass Bowl in Toledo, Ohio. The contest will be televised locally by the Buckeye Cable Sports Network (BCSN). WEMU (89.1 FM) will provide audio coverage of the game with Matt Shepard and Andrew Wellock calling the action on the field.
WHITE TURNS IN A CAREER DAY AGAINST AKRON: Junior running back Dominique White turned in a career-best 164 yards rushing on 28 carries and tallied three touchdown runs in the victory over Akron, Oct. 1. The Detroit, Mich. native's three scores against the Zips marked the first time an EMU player had rushed for three touchdowns in a game since Dwayne Priest pulled off the feat in the 2010 season finale at Buffalo, Nov. 20. In total, the Eagles rolled up 322 yards of offense on 65 plays with White turning in the bulk of the work.
Entering the contest, White had rushed just 18 times in his 10-game career for 57 yards.
RUN, RUN, RUN: In five games this season, Eastern Michigan has rushed for 1,165 yards on 235 carries for the 12th best ground attack in the nation. In fact, the Eagles have been picking up yardage at a prolific rate and are currently on pace to set the school record for most net rushing yards in a season. The 1987 Hurons, who captured the 1987 Mid-American Conference title, ran the ball a program-best 610 times for a total of 2,701 yards. Through its first five games, that 1987 squad ran the football 254 times for 1,141 yards and 14 touchdowns.
THE GROUND INVASION: The 2011 squad is the only EMU team since 1987 to surpass 1,000-yards on the ground during its first five contests. In fact, from 1988 to 2010, just two teams even reached 900 yards gained during that span. The 2004 club racked up 965 yards while the 2008 team picked up 964 yards.
ALL-TIME VS. TOLEDO: Separated by just 50 miles, Toledo and Eastern Michigan will be meeting for the 39th time in school history. The Rockets hold a 27-11 edge in the series, including winning 10 of the last 11 meetings in the series dating back to the 2000 campaign.
The Green and White's last victory at the Glass Bowl came Oct. 23, 1999, when Walter Church guided EMU to a 20-13 upset of UT. In that contest, Church threw for 210 yards on 20-of-29 passing, while Lincoln Dupree recorded a 58-yard interception return for a touchdown just before halftime that proved to be the difference in the seven-point decision.
BEST FIVE GAME DEFENSIVE EFFORT SINCE 1989: Through the first five games this season, the Eagles' defense has allowed just 104 points for a total of 20.8 points per game. The last EMU squad to accomplish the feat was the 1989 team, which allowed just 90 points through its first five contests en route to a 4-0-1 start.
EMU currently ranks 36th nationally in scoring defense and 3rd in the MAC.
PERFECT AT HOME: Eastern Michigan is 3-0 inside the confines of Rynearson Stadium during the 2011 campaign. The last time the Green and White boasted back-to-back-to-back home victories was 1995, when the Eagles knocked off UNLV (51-6), Ohio (31-20) and Central Michigan (34-24) on consecutive weekends.
FAMILIAR FACES: Both the Eastern Michigan and Toledo coaching staffs are very familiar with each other, as each side features assistant coaches that have worked for the other football program. EMU Offensive Coordinator Ken Karcher served in the same capacity for UT in 2008, while Running Backs Coach/Recruiting Coordinator Doug Downing was an assistant for the Rockets from 2001-08.
Conversely, Toledo's Quarterbacks Coach Scott Isphording was on the EMU staff from 2004-08, serving as the Eagles' offensive coordinator in his final two seasons in Ypsilanti.
BACK TO THE BUCKEYE STATE: The EMU roster features 13 players from the state of Ohio, including: Marcus English (Dayton, Ohio-Trotwood-Madison), Jordan Erbes (Kettering, Ohio-Fairmont), Kody Fulkerson (Zanesville, Ohio-Maysville), David Gibson (Cleveland, Ohio-Solon), Alex Gillett (Green Springs, Ohio-Clyde), Trey Hunter (Pemberville, Ohio-Eastwood), Kody Fulkerson (Zanesville, Ohio-Maysville), Jake Pennese (Toledo, Ohio-St. John's Jesuit), Jacob Rich (Painesville, Ohio-Riverside), Dominique Sherrer (Cincinnati, Ohio-Colerain), Kris Strange (Pickerington, Ohio-Central), Corey Welch (Akron, Ohio-Green) and Nate Wilson (Mentor, Ohio-Mentor).
EAGLES' LAST WIN OVER THE ROCKETS: The Eagles' last victory over the Rockets occurred Oct. 21, 2006, when EMU escaped with a 17-13 victory. With EMU clinging to a 9-7 lead late in the fourth quarter, Toledo missed a field goal that would have put them ahead by one. But, a personal foul penalty for roughing the center by the Eagles gave the Rockets a second chance that they would take advantage of with a score when quarterback Clint Cochran connected with tight end Josh Powell on a four-yard touchdown strike to give Toledo a 13-9 lead with just 3:11 left in the game. On the ensuing two-point conversion attempt, EMU defensive end Kevin Howe forced a fumble by Cochran which was picked up and returned by Darran Matthews for two points to cut the Rocket lead to 13-11. Trumaine Riley then returned the ensuing kickoff 45 yards to the EMU 46-yard line. The Eagles then put on a game-winning march, going 54 yards in five plays capped off by an 18-yard touchdown run by Pierre Walker with 36 seconds remaining to give the Eagles the come-from-behind victory.
EIGHT CONTESTS TO DECIDE A CHAMPION: For the first time since the 2005 campaign, Eastern Michigan plays eight straight Mid-American Conference games to close out the regular season. Kent State, Northern Illinois, Ohio and Toledo are the only other league institutions that can boast that feat about their 2011 schedules.
