MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) –– The Eastern Michigan University football team remains on the road Saturday, Oct. 15, with a Mid-American Conference road test against Central Michigan University. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Kelly/Shorts Stadium in Mount Pleasant, Mich. The contest will not be televised, but WEMU (89.1 FM) will provide audio coverage of the game with Matt Shepard and Andrew Wellock calling the action on the field.
The Eagles enter the contest with a record of 3-3 (1-1 MAC) after dropping a 54-16 road tilt at Toledo, Oct. 8. Meanwhile, the Chippewas are 2-4 (1-1 MAC) after falling to North Carolina State, 38-24, in a non-conference affair in Raleigh, N.C.

ALL-TIME VERSUS CMU: Central Michigan and Eastern Michigan will be meeting for the 89th time in school history. The Chippewas hold a 55-27-6 edge in the series, however, the Eagles have won four of the last seven meetings in the series dating back to the 2004 campaign. The series began in 1902 when CMU recorded a 10-0 shutout, Nov. 1.
The Green and White's last victory at Kelly/Shorts Stadium came Nov. 16, 2007, when Andy Schmitt guided EMU to a 48-45 upset of the MAC West Division Champion Chippewas. In that contest, Schmitt and Pierre Walker combined for seven touchdowns (6 rushing, 1 passing) as the Eagles captured the Michigan MAC trophy.

RUN, RUN, RUN: In six games this season, Eastern Michigan has rushed for 1,254 yards on 267 carries for the 25th-best ground attack in the nation. In fact, the Eagles have been picking up yardage at a prolific rate and are currently on pace to set the school record for most net rushing yards in a season. The 1987 Hurons, who captured the 1987 Mid-American Conference title, ran the ball a program-best 610 times for a total of 2,701 yards. Through its first six games, that 1987 squad ran the football 288 times for 1,221 yards and 15 touchdowns.

UPON FURTHER REVIEW, KARUTZ STILL BLASTS OFF AT TOLEDO: Junior punter Jay Karutz turned in an outstanding effort at the Glass Bowl against Toledo, Oct. 8. The 6-foot-2, 198-pound Karutz racked up eight punts for 389 yards and a 48.9 yard average against the Rockets. It was originally thought that he had shattered the EMU single-game mark of 49.5 set by Karutz versus Miami University, Sept. 11, 2010. However, upon later review by Toledo, the statistics crew had incorrectly spotted Karutz's first punt of the second quarter to Toledo's 23-yard line when it should have been to the 33-yard line.
Instead, the 48.6 average ranks fourth best in the EMU record book, and his 389 yards via the punt are 15th best.  It still though is the most EMU punting yards by an individual in a single-game since David Rysko tallied 517 at Michigan State, Aug. 31, 2002.

NOT SO FAST MY FRIEND: Thanks in large part to Justin Cudworth, the Eagles have racked up 40 tackles for loss. The Eagles are averaging more than six tackles for loss per game. The Eagles are on pace for 79 tackles for loss which would be their highest total since 2001 when they had 82.
In addition, EMU's 13 sacks already surpass its total of 10 from last season. The Eagles are tied for third in the MAC in sacks.

BEST SIX GAME DEFENSIVE EFFORT SINCE 1996: Through the first six games this season, the Eagles' defense has allowed just 158 points for a total of 26.3 points per game. The last EMU squad to accomplish the feat was the 1996 team, which allowed just 142 points through its first six contests. EMU currently ranks 62nd nationally in scoring defense and fifth in the MAC.

A THORN IN THE CHIPPEWAS SIDE RETURNS: Former kicker Andrew Wellock returns to Mount Pleasant to broadcast the Eagles and the Chippewas battle for the 89th time Saturday, Oct. 15. The Green and White posted a 2-2 record against CMU  from 2003-06, as Wellock turned in 37 of his career 299 points in the rivalry games. In total, he was 10-of-11 in PATs and 9-of-15 in field goals when kicking against the Maroon and Gold.
The Canton, Ohio native's biggest impact came in 2005, when he kicked a 19-yard field goal as time expired to send the game into overtime in Mount Pleasant, Mich. Then in the extra secession, he booted a 36 yarder to give the Eagles the 23-20 victory after the Chippewas had already  turned the ball over on downs.

BATTLE FOR THE MICHIGAN MAC TROPHY: Saturday begins the Eagles' chase for the Michigan MAC Trophy, which is given to the Michigan MAC university that defeats the other two schools in the same sport in the same regular season. In the event that no school defeats its other two rivals during the regular season, the Michigan MAC Trophy will remain with the winning school until one of the other rivals claims the title.
Created in 2005 by the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame, CMU currently holds the football trophy and WMU has the basketball version.

THE GROUND INVASION: The 2011 squad is the only EMU team since 1987 to surpass 1,000-yards on the ground during its first five contests. In fact, from 1988 to 2010, just two teams even reached 900 yards gained during that span. The 2004 club racked up 965 yards while the 2008 team picked up 964 yards.

ON THE HORIZON: Following the CMU game, Eastern Michigan returns home for a homecoming date with instate rival Western Michigan University Saturday, Oct. 22. More than 60 activities are planned for on and off campus, with the festivities culminating with the Eagles hooking up with the Broncos at 1 p.m.

PERFECT AT HOME:  Eastern Michigan is 3-0 inside the confines of Rynearson Stadium during the 2011 campaign. The last time the Green and White boasted back-to-back-to-back home victories was 1995, when the Eagles knocked off UNLV (51-6), Ohio (31-20) and Central Michigan (34-24) on consecutive weekends.
