Tennis Sweeps Detroit, 7-0, in Season Home Opener

Despite shaky play, Eagles prevail
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan women's tennis team managed to overcome a lethargic doubles performance in its season home opener to defeat the visiting University of Detroit Titans, 7-0, at the Chippewa Racquet Club in the first match of a double header for the home team.
The Eagles didn't play the most spirited doubles matches, with Celine Donnet and Georgia de'Lisle Tarr falling in the No. 3 doubles, 8-3. Detroit also pushed Eastern to the limit in the other two matches, with the Eagles squeaking by 9-7 in doubles No. 1 and 8-6 in the No. 2 doubles matchup.
The Green and White also were not as sharp in singles play, but still took all the matches, securing the 7-0 sweep. Miriam Westerink was pushed to three sets by UDM's AmandaAmanda Cornwell before earning the 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 decision. Senior Xu Chang also went the distance in her match after being downed in the first set.
The Eagles will play the second match of the double header tonight, Saturday, Jan. 29, starting at 8:30 p.m.

“Overall, I'm glad to get the 7-0 win, however, our doubles play was flat and sloppy,” said EMU Head Coach Ryan Ray. “It's a good win, but we've played better tennis and we need to keep striving for that level and better.”
