Burke and Ross come up short at Canadian Open while MacDougall stars at BC Amateur
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Both current and former members of the Eastern Michigan University men's golf team recorded a busy week on the links with Zach MacDougall (Coquitlam, British Columbia- Centennial) excelling at the star-studded British Columbia Amateur Championship at the Castlegar Golf Club in Castlegar, B.C. Meanwhile, Cam Burke (Baden, Ontario-Waterloo Secondary) and Christopher Ross (Dundas, Ontario-Parkside) missed the cut at the PGA Tour's RBC Canadian Open at St. George's Golf and Country Club in Toronto, Ontario.
MacDougall shot rounds of 72, 77, 72, and 69 for a total of 292 in a tie for 20th place. Adam Svensson put together four solid rounds of 67-71-68-70 to claim the title by five shots at eight-under 276.
It took Burke almost five hours to play 18 holes at the St. George's Golf and Country Club, but it was a 15-minute stretch that did him in. Burke dropped three shots during that span on a muggy Friday before fighting back for an even-par 70 at the RBC Canadian Open. His two-day total of one-over 141 left him just shy of making the 36-hole cut and playing the weekend.
The Canadian Open marks the start of a busy stretch for Burke, who will attempt to win his third straight Canadian men's amateur championship at the London Hunt Club in mid-August. In between, he is scheduled to play the Porter Cup in Niagara Falls, N.Y., and Western amateur in Glencoe, Ill.
Ross , who turned pro in December, also played very well, but fell just short with a two-day mark of 140 with rounds of 72 and 68.
After this week, Ross is hoping he can get into the two upcoming Canadian Tour events in Ontario -- the Clublink Jane Rogers Championship the week of Aug. 9 at Greystone in Milton and The Economical Insurance Group Seaforth Country Classic the following week in Seaforth.
