BREMERTON, Wash. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's golf team came up short in its quest for the program's first trip to the NCAA National Championships since 1947, finishing seventh at the NCAA West Regional Championships, which were held at the par 72, 7,104-yard Gold Mountain Golf Club.
The Eagles, who held the No. 9 spot after the first and second rounds, fired a five-under 283 Saturday, May 21, and fell three strokes shy of making the NCAA "cut." The top five finishing teams advance to the 2010 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships slated for June 1-6 at The Honors Course in Chattanooga, Tenn. The Green and White gave it all they could muster, climbing as high as sixth place midway through the final 18 hole round to finish with the second-lowest team score on the day.
Host Washington turned in the best round of the day -- a 13-under 275 -- to lead from wire-to-wire and win the West Regional team title by 29 strokes over Southern California. San Diego, Oregon State and Illinois finished a respective three through five and will join the Huskies and Trojans in Chattanooga.
Four Eagles closed out their collegiate career for the Green and White, with senior Cam Burke (Baden, Ontario-Waterloo Secondary) leading the charge for the Eagles with a final round 72 to finish in 16th place at 217 (74-71-72). The Baden, Ontario native entered the day needing to leapfrog five individuals to claim the at-large berth that goes to the lowest finishing individual not on an advancing team. Burke finished the day still eight spots back of that qualifying position.
Junior Nick Carbary (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Mattawan) shot a blistering round of 68 to equal his career-low for a single-round to tie for 40th place at 223 (82-73-68). Senior Marty Jeppesen (Saline, Mich.-Saline) closed with a 71 for his 17th round under-par during the 2009-10 campaign in 43rd place with a 54-hole mark of 224 (73-80-71). Senior Brandon Lemons (Portage, Mich.-Portage Central) and redshirt junior Brad Larente (Cambridge, Ontario-Hespeler Secondary) rounded out the lineup with a 226 (76-72-78) and a 230 (80-78-72), respectively.
Head Coach Bruce Cunningham and the Eagles have become accustomed to the NCAA experience, as EMU has either placed a team or an individual in the last six NCAA Tournaments, dating back to the 2005 campaign. Last season Christopher Ross earned an at-large bid to the NCAA South Central Regional Championships in Stillwater, Okla. In 2008, the Eagles placed 14th at the NCAA Central Regional after a 15th-place showing at the 2007 NCAA East Regional, which was EMU's first team appearance in more than 60 years. Additionally, former EMU great Korey Mahoney qualified as an individual in both the 2005 and 2006 championships.
Prior to the current streak of NCAA appearances, Bob McNiff qualified for the championships in 1985 and Marc Dingman made back-to-back appearances in 1981 and 1982. Eastern Michigan made its first NCAA Championship appearance in 1947, when the then-Hurons finished 37th.
